Back when I was still an architecture student, @cnunewurbanism.bsky.social was helping the Hope VI program build community for people who need it most. We still are, and every day I see more evidence of our impact, including the research out tonight encouraging us to keep investing in place:
Iβm so excited to moderate this conversation! Join us tomorrow for a walk through the illustrations that put #newurbanism in perspective!

Fantastic article about one of the three #CNU33 @cnunewurbanism.bsky.social technical assistance Legacy Projects, part of our impact in this yearβs Congress host city of Providence!
This week, CNU is in New Bedford, MA with ARUP and Street Plans for a #CNU33 Legacy Project! The Love the Ave project will develop a vision for the next phase of the Acushnet Avenue neighborhood. Learn more:
"Cities are a collective project, requiring public investment to succeed, and thatβs one reason why, historically, their citizenry hasnβt formed the base of the Republican Party."
Donβt miss your opportunity to select which of these excellent candidates should help shape the future of the organization and the New Urbanist movement!
@cnunewurbanism.bsky.social Members: today (before 11:59 ET) is the last chance to vote for the open member-elected seat on the Board of Directors!
Setting the record straight on the virtues of the walkability that @cnunewurbanism.bsky.social advocates for:
You love to see it.
Don made an extraordinary difference in this world by elevating what should be common sense, and I think that if we could do anything to honor his impact, it would be to similarly find our own way to spread sense that is far too uncommon.
βSomeone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if theyβd fallen in love.β #CityMakingMath
50 reasons to want walkable streets.
Spread the word: @cnunewurbanism.bsky.social Board Member Election time is here again! If you are a CNU member, and are interested in supporting the organization in this important way, I hope you'll consider throwing your hat into the ring! www.cnu.org/2025-election
This is a fantastic list of folks that I certainly turn to for expertise on urbanism, and you should too! Well done, @brenttoderian.bsky.social!
1/4 PSA from those of us going into a 4th day of a public-safety power shutdown east of the LA fires π₯ due to high winds, dry veg, & power lines in super high fire hazard areas in our neighborhood. Solar panels & backup systems like Tesla Power Walls, do not guarantee all bases covered. π§΅
I lost at least an hour of productivity diving deep into this today. Well worth the time⦠Thanks, @yfreemark.bsky.social!
Burned-Out Parents Need Better #PublicSpaces
Psychologist Darby Saxbe:
we need to βbuild back our tolerance for children in public spaces,β she writes, βand create safe environments where lightly supervised kids can roam freely.β

there a street in your city that should be a safe, lively public space? Is there a mobility hub that could become a destination in its own right? @ppsplacemaking.bsky.social is offering $100K and technical assistance to make it happen! πΆββοΈπ
Love thee, Notre Dame! βοΈ
But yes, itβs an area of design and policy innovation (and advocacy) that I would encourage more New Urbanists to work toward, and shout from the rooftops about!
Atlantaβs Mayor Dinkins is prioritizing raising children as a policy priority, and it reinforces the Cityβs planning strategy of investing in complete neighborhoods. And there are folks studying the issue (for example: www.brookings.edu/articles/und...).
I agree, itβs fundamental. While important for implementation, focusing solely on the right housing product misses the bigger picture: families need neighborhoods, and the complete list of daily needs, services (schools!) that support childrenβs needs as well as adults.
This is an important point, one that I know CNU has had sessions about before but is ripe in the 2025 host city - Providence. The city has focused on adaptive reuse of historic (former office/commercial) buildings into micro units there, but are families being encouraged/accommodated too?
Parking lots turn streets into miserable places to walk.
New study finds that parking lots "negatively - and substantially - impact walkability; their objective walkability score is half that of other road segments."

This, this, this. We are beholden to a mode of transportation that routinely endangers our lives, when we simply would not have to be if we chose walkable, sustainable, equitable urbanism over sprawl.
