If these Greek ships shoot down a Shahed or something, that might be the first engagement between Greek and Persian/Iranian states since the last Byzantine–Sasanian War around 1,300 years ago.

I could be missing some conflicts between the Byzantines and the post-Abbasid Iranian dynasties, though?

I am struggling to think of any country this describes that doesn’t *also* let homeless people die on the street.

Westboro Baptist Church tried to make an Anti-Luigi Mangione poster but it just looks like Luigi is threatening billionaires and goes unironically hard af

Not entirely but generally, to my understanding, one makes the switch earlier in their career. Palmer may know better.

The fundamental thrust of totalitarianism is that the government dictates terms of how every aspect of every organization, as well as your own life, operates. The Soviet Union, the Nazis, the modern PRC, all have commissars in every org to ensure they follow the government political line.

As someone who went to an (ostensibly) Quaker high school, this is definitely true. Our soccer team had an "unofficial" chant that went "Fight fight, inner-light, kill, Quakers kill!"

It was heavily frowned upon, but that didn't stop it from popping up, especially against military prep schools.

1/ Something which I don't think gets articulated clearly often enough is that a system where countries generally respect international sovereignty and territorial integrity is not pure charity or morality by the United States, but in its direct interests.

Despite it being the strongest bear.

The 2-hour thing is really fascinating!

Here's another map, which I'm quite fond of. When you zoom in, the detail is incredible considering someone had to chart all this information with physical/analog tools.

It's also neat to be able to see the tri-city area right before it really merged.

It’s a big problem in the foreign policy/NatSec community. There’s a lot of people that try to rationalize irrational stuff. I’ve said before that if Trump tried to nuke the moon, there are people who would be like β€œWell, moonlight has often been a hindrance in night operations so this makes sense.”

Dell seems to be the first to realise we don't actually care about AI PCs "What we've learned over the course of this year, from a consumer perspective, is they're not buying based on AI."

DELL EXEC: Consumers are β€œnot buying based on AI. In fact I think AI probably confuses them more than it helps them understand a specific outcome."

All the well-connected Georgetown and Yale grads I met at MUN did well enough of course, but they were the few and far between, and ironically when I check Facebook most ended up in the tech field, business, or law long-term.

Even for them policy just didn't really pay. These days I work in IT.

Then all the in-field opportunities afterward were exactly the unpaid internship type jobs raised in the article. Everyone just said "Oh why don't you go work for the UN?", meanwhile there were news articles about UN staffers camping on the street outside because they can't afford rent in NYC.

I say "out-group" because his focus was treated with mild disdain by the rest of the department. His two classes had under 10 students.

Most of the rest of my undergrad IR studies were wasted on largely irrelevant theories of IR. On average, my history classes were more instructive.

As someone who studied IR in undergrad and did a post-grad degree in "International Conflict Analysis" this article rings really true.

The most exposure I had to military history in undergrad came from the two "American Grand Strategy" classes taught by the out-group IR professor in a small room.

Patriotβ€”it's Chiang Kai-Shek. I'll be honest with you. Polls show us five points behind the warlords and red bandits. This next fundraising deadline is critical if we want the Northern Expedition to succeed. Can I count on you to donate by Friday? Any amount you give will go towards making a free and united China and also to ransoming your family members that the Green Gang have taken hostage.

Full-body portrait photograph of Susie Wiles, a middle aged woman in an olive pantsuit with a white shirt underneath. The room around her looks unstaged - in the foreground is a sliver of a wing chair, on the other side a small portion of a desk with half of some papers and a post it showing. There is a light switch just over her right shouder and an open hallway behind that.

Full body portrait photograph of JD Vance, a smarmy-looking thirtyish man in a dark suit with a red tie and white shirt. He is posed against a blank gray wall. To his right is a flag on a flagstand, only 2/3s of it in shot. Next to his left upper arm on the wall is a light switch and a thermostat. On the left side of the shot, we can see the very back of a blue chair in side profile, a bit of a lampshade and a tiny sliver of a side table.

Oh my god y'all I had not seen the rest of the Vanity Fair photos holy shit. Christopher Anderson deserves a medal.

Look at this. He left the LIGHT SWITCHES in the edited photos! These assholes look like their well-meaning mom took a picture of them on their first day in a grown-up job.

I was actually interviewed by a journalist on this subject, for a fairly prominent American publication, due to my background in HoI4 mod development. The article didn’t make it past the editor, unfortunately, and the subject is badly understudied imo.
