Reframing repeat violence: A critical life-course perspective
Abstract. This article advances a critical life-course perspective on repeat violence, drawing on qualitative interviews with people with lived experience
When violence unfolds across multiple relationships and contexts, incident-based systems struggle to recognise how harms accumulate.

So why did ICE detain her, and keep her locked up for so long? A possible answer began to emerge over the weeks she was incarcerated. As Karen got to know the guards at the Northwest ICE Processing Center where she was held, she kept hearing the same thing from them: that ICE officers are paid a bonus every time they detain someone. "Individual ICE agents get money per head that they detain - the guards told me that," Karen says.
It's no secret that the Trump administration has been pouring money into ICE. Its annual budget - $6bn a decade ago - is now $85n; ICE is now the highest - funded law enforcement agency in the US. Since last August, new recruits can expect to receive a signing-on bonus of up to $50,000. Karen's experience has left her convinced that ICE agents are being given even more incentives
- to arrest and detain anyone they possibly can, even blameless tourists who have all the paperwork they need to be in the US.
Within days of Donald Trump's second inauguration on 20 January 2025, his administration ordered ICE officials to detain more people, with new quotas that would increase the total number of arrests from a few hundred to 1,200-1,500 a day.
Reports immediately began to emerge of international travellers being detained by
ICE officers.

Sociopathic stuff. Just the casual tone of it, as well as the implication that if he didn’t ‘like her as a person’ it would be fine.
Like, in the most literal sense, I don’t think I could live with myself if I knew I’d done this to someone.

Lowe rotting away… dead… in a Muslim gang run prison. Is this still Reform policy? Starting to thaw a little on them if so.

I had the same thought. And it would be because they know it is a waste of their time so enforcing it to the letter highlights the problem with the legislation. (And also avoids criticism from the government)

Good on Sunak for flatly condemning KK’s obvious racism, rather than falling into the trap of Gove and Grant’s prevarications

The president appears to envy Chinese economic interventionism — but in China, the authorities tend to set the parameters and allow companies to compete vigorously.
The overt US turn towards favouritism and quid pro quo governance risks undermining US economic foundations by reshaping incentives across markets and regulation.
When capital flows primarily to those with access and connections, competition becomes distorted, inequality deepens and policymaking weakens. The most productive or innovative businesses could get sidelined.
Trump looks to be replicating Putin's approach to the economy rather than Xi's

What was the pleasure in stealing from the slot machines? Javid's face lights up. "Oh, I loved it. I loved it. The pleasure was that you could make money from these machines." He pauses. "Well, actually not make money, take money from these machines." He says they justified their actions by telling themselves the owners were also acting unlawfully. "Bas and I thought that the people who operated these amusement parks shouldn't be letting kids in anyway. You had to be 18. Bas was 11, I was 13. We were obviously nowhere near the legal age."

You have to read this. Firsthand affidavit from one of the women who was there and recording the video. She talks about how Alex Pretti was directing traffic when she arrived. She watched him be killed in front of her. She's afraid to go home, worried she'll be arrested.
