165 years ago today the Nevada Territory was established by President Lincoln, in no small part to prevent the Mormons from declaring the entire Great Basin their economic and theocratic kingdom.
It's been centuries of this bullshit, mind. See HOW TO HIDE AN EMPIRE, a book that should be required in every US high school curriculum:

What the genocide in Gaza reinforced is that there are no "civilians" when it comes to Israel and the United States. The rest of the world learned the same lesson and the consequences are going to be felt across the world.
One family is about to control CBS, CNN, HBO, and TikTok. They’ll buy Warner Brothers with $24 billion from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. To win over Trump, they canceled Colbert, blocked a 60 Minutes CECOT investigation, and blocked Talarico. Much more will follow. Block this rotten deal.
the right won the culture war bc it built a machine to do it (southern strategy, neoliberalism, reagan, gingrich, buying up the news) then kept pushing until they found an angle that got no measurable mainstream pushback (gamergate into trump) then blew the door off the hinges (project 2025)
No, but this is a brilliant solution for next year! 🤣
I completely cleaned up my “Downloads” folder, so I feel like I’ve achieved Inbox Zero
After 7 months in Nevada, I’m convinced many don’t know how great things can be when you have state taxes that can be used to invest in public things—parks, programs, SCHOOLS, etc.
Not everything needs to be run by a church, a non-profit, or a volunteer org. It can be better! Public is good!
Pretty clear instance of FAFO
Jesse Jackson riding a horse into the #NoDAPL camp in 2016.
RIP Jesse Jackson.
Here he is in 2016 riding into #NoDAPL camp at Standing Rock with great aplomb. He always did his best over many years to show up and support oppressed people in struggle.
BREAKING NEWS: The Rev. Jesse Jackson was a lifelong civil rights advocate until his death Tuesday at the age of 84.
Utah has never had a plan to support Native American students—despite decades of data showing they are left behind.
In districts here w/ the most Indigenous students, only 1 in 10 are reading on grade level.
Now the state could be required to step up.

James Baldwin said, “To study the economic structure of this country, to know which hands control the wealth, and to which end, seems an academic exercise—and yet it is necessary, all of it is necessary.”
And as Ruth Wilson Gilmore said about the money, "Really follow it––not pretend to follow it."
Just saw this, too. Big yikes! 😬
The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California have acquired 10,274 acres northeast of Lake Tahoe, an area known as Loyalton Ranch.

i think this more than anything is what miller wants. vast detention camps with all of the suffering and death that means.
Mormon settlers colonized southwestern Alberta in the 1880s as an outpost to protect the practice of polygamy beyond the borders of US interference. Ironically, one of the leaders of this movement is a Mormon politician w/ a degree from BYU.
I talked about G. Harris Daggett today. You might not know him. He was central to the case that led to the Supreme Court's 1957 Sweezy v. New Hampshire decision--in which Warren wrote that without academic freedom "civilization will stagnate and die." First time the Court endorsed academic freedom.
1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.
Hundreds of kids are still detained.
We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵
What can you do with a history degree?
It was transforming the biggest NFL stage in the world into a sugar cane plantation that did it for me.
Like, the multiple layers of turning an American icon into a plantation and highlighting the history of exploitation of Black and Brown bodies by the NFL and American colonialism simultaneously?
Do you wanna make sure you didn’t miss a single second of symbolism from Bad Bunny’s halftime show? This thread gotchu!
i think about this every day and the more history i learn, the truer it becomes
Mills recognized that as the power elite becomes increasingly degenerate, it is increasingly difficult for their intellectual acolytes to formulate reasonable ideological justifications for their corrupt and irresponsible actions. In these circumstances, the power elite resorts to intellectual repression against those who call attention to their declining political capacities; that is, the intelligentsia who work in universities, museums, the arts, scientific institutes, entertainment, and the mass media.
Sociologist C. Wright Mills saw this coming—and tried to warn us—60+ years ago.

So, legal experts/scholars… is their no recourse these professors have if they were hired under the auspices of and/or earned tenure? What about contract law, etc?
