An illustration of an elf laying on their stomach facing a duck that is happily quacking at them. The backdrop is of tall grasses and bushes and trees, with dandelion puffs, clovers, and thistles, and in the foreground there is a pond with duckweed covering the surface, and ducklings peacefully floating about with flowers on their heads. The colour scheme is warm with yellows, oranges, greens, dusty pink accents, and lavender colours.

"IN OBSERVANCE & SOLIDARITY". Two black speech bubbles with white text read "HOURLY COMICS DAY IS NOW ON FEB 8TH. CARTOONISTS HONOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH. FEB 1 - MAR 1". There is an illustration of a black silhouetted hand raised and holding a pen in the top right, and an illustration of a nib pen and an ink well personified on the bottom right. The nib and ink are bumping fists. A URL at the bottom is "hourlycomicsday.com".

A graph titled “The Creative Process” showing a cute pumpkin girl going through stages of making something. She starts out high up, “I just had the best idea!!!” and starts sliding down a hill “this isnt as simple as I expected.” She winds up in The Swamp of Despair (two skulls say: “this part sucks! don’t give up!”) She says, “this sucks, I suck. Why am I wasting my time.” She crawls her way out of the swamp “it’s not perfect but I’m going to finish” and crests the final hill, “it’s done??? I lived???” Finally, she walks away from it all, glittering with pride. “This turned out pretty good!”

"Flow" in a comic page layout
Comic creators often talk about "flow" through the composition of comics pages, but little work has actually studied it. So, our newest paper explores what flow is and how it works, which I’ve summarized in a more accessible way in this post: www.visuallanguagelab.com/2025/12/goin...

In-progress comic page in which an Asian American teenager sits on her bed while someone in her phone asks "What?" and she yells "I said I'm going, I'm going!" We see her phone end the call and she tries to open an app, but gets a notification that says it needs to be updated. She huffs in frustration and exits her room.

4 panel comic Panel 1: Red Guy looking way way too happy yells “Hey Guys! Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?” Blue Guy next to him calmly says “Shhh” Panel 2: Blue Guy tenderly puts his arms around Red Guy and says “You don’t have to do this” Panel 3: Blue Guy still holds Red Guy tightly and repeats “You don’t have to do this every year”. Red Guy begins to break. Panel 4: Red Guy dissolves into Blue Guy’s embrace, sobbing. He finally feels the weight of Christmas Discourse lifting from his shoulders. He is finally free.
i’m setting you free. i’m releasing you from the discourse
