I released my 3rd Kala Mandala adventure — Tragedy at Zaya’s Theatre — last week. It’s heavily inspired by two things: Southeast Asian/Indian performing arts, and how so many things (e.g. objects, plants) have sentience in SEA. What if non-material things like theatre plays can become sentient?

here's some whodunnit UI mockups vs how they ended up lookin in game! I really like how they ended up, but I do want to learn how to keep some of the wonkiness and shape irregularity of the mockups in the final ones in a way that's still clean

the nondescription of it really fit in with how abstracted and senseless the corpse pile felt for ramla in the game. i wish more bgs were done like this, but im also glad it stands out because of it- makes it feel special. as all corpse piles should feel.

this is because Ediction lives and dies by the difference blending mode, which subtracts pixels between overlay and base and takes the higher brightness. yknow, math bullshit. here's how it looks with them combined in difference mode:

this bg is the only place where i realized i really wanted the handpainted and parallax vibes to overlap, which led to me having to paint this in two versions where one is like a negative of the other on a color wheel (red is really cyan, etc). 1st pic is the overlay, 2nd is the base.
