Why can someone in suburban Sydney own 6 guns legally? New laws might change that The Bondi shooters legally owned the guns they used to kill 15 people in a terrorist attack. The government has flagged harsher gun laws, but will they work?

If, like me, you were struggling to understand why the hell someone living in suburban Sydney needed to own six guns, here's a really great explainer:

Queensland’s forests are still being bulldozed β€” and new parks alone won’t save them Queensland’s conservation ledger is in the red. Despite some new national parks, bulldozers are still clearing forests and vegetation across the state.

Despite decades of conservation promises, Queensland remains a globally significant hotspot for destroying forests and native vegetation.

This @theconversation.com story finds Queensland has lost at least 21% of its original woody vegetation since colonisation.

This is desperately sad. Professor John Woinarski breaks the news for @aunz.theconversation.com that Australia's next animal - the tiny Christmas Island Shrew - has officially been declared extinct.

Literary journal Meanjin to close after 85 years of publishing Meanjin, a mainstay of Australia's cultural landscape and the nation's second-oldest literary publication, is shuttering after Melbourne University Publishing decided to cease financial support.

What a shame. Melbourne Uni is one of the richest universities in Australia, surely it could pay the salary of two editors and distribution costs?!

Barely an hour ago, Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif warned us all:

β€œIf this madness doesn’t end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased β€” and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.”

Israel just killed him.

Nearly 200 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza. The rest work under sickness, hunger and fire to report the reality there. Meanwhile the rest of the world’s media is locked out. This is a global press freedom crisis and @withmeaa.bsky.social was proud to join the March for Humanity.

$500m government bill looms for Chevron oil field cleanup The $2.3 billion-plus decommissioning on Barrow Island will be part-funded by the Federal and WA governments returning about half the royalties they received over six decades.

The Federal and WA governments will pay about $0.5B towards the $2.3B clean-up of Barrow Island after Chevron ended six decades of oil production on the contaminated Pilbara nature reserve.

Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die
July 21, 2025

AFP has been working with 1 writer, 3 photographers and 6 videographers, all freelance, in the Gaza Strip since its staff journalists left in 2024.

Along with a few others, they are now the only ones left to report what is happening in the Gaza Strip. The international press has been banned from entering the territory for nearly two years.

We refuse to watch them die.

One of them, Bashar, has been working with AFP since 2010, first as a fixer, then freelance photographer, and since 2024, as lead photographer. On July 19th he managed to post a message on Facebook: β€œI no longer have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin and I can’t work anymore.”

Bashar, 30, works & lives in the same conditions as all Gazans, moving from one refugee camp to another under Israeli bombings. For > a year he’s lived in utter destitution, working at extreme risk to his life. Hygiene is a major issue for him, with recurring bouts of severe intestinal illness.

Since Feb, Bashar’s been living in the ruins of his home in Gaza City with his mother, 4 brothers & sisters and the family of one of his brothers. Their house is devoid of any furnishings, except a few cushions. On Sunday morning, he reported that one of his brothers had β€œfallen, due to hunger.”

Even though these journalists receive a monthly salary from AFP, it’s no longer enough to buy food, or they have to pay completely exorbitant prices. The banking system has collapsed, and those who exchange money via online bank accounts charge a commission of up to 40%.

AFP no longer has the ability to provide them with a vehicle and there is not enough fuel to allow these journalists to travel for their reporting. Driving a car means becoming a target for Israeli airstrikes. AFP reporters therefore travel on foot or by donkey cart. (alt txt continued in next post)

I met with the Torres Strait Islander elders who lost their landmark climate case. They won't give up Uncle Paul Kabai and Uncle Pabai Pabai, two brothers-in-law, are exemplars of the extraordinary commitment of ordinary people pursuing climate justice.

In the Torres Strait, the rising ocean floods graves, and gardens are too poisoned by salinity to grow food. It's why Uncle Paul and Uncle Pabai won't let yesterday's ruling stop them, @mikiperkins.bsky.social writes.
