Page 1 First of all to note: The whole idea of Bluesky is that Bluesky is a PUBLIC PLATFORM. Everything that you post, like, block, etc. is public, findable information. This is because Bluesky is meant to be open so that third-party developers can create apps for it. In order for them to make those apps work, they must be able to use your information, so therefore most things are public.   What is Bluesky best for? Bluesky is best for a heavily curated online experience. You can easily block and moderate your experience, so you can avoid ragebait, drama, and all other sorts of things that take years off your lifespan. You can easily subscribe to user-made blocklists to get people you wouldn’t like away from you. Bluesky is not best for if you want high engagement numbers, especially if you are posting in a small fandom. Bluesky is not the best if you want privacy (remember the whole idea of Bluesky is that it is a public platform.)   How to Moderate Your Experience: Block and mute people, but be aware that blocks are public information (mutes aren’t.) To do this more easily, you can subscribe to user-made moderation lists or use your own. Utilize muted words to mute words related to topics you dislike.

Page 2 How to Find Posts: The primary way to find posts on Bluesky is through following other users and using “Feeds.” Feeds are created by users or developers to compile posts. You can even make your own custom feed if you know how to code or use an application to help you. Bluesky will start you out with a “Following” feed and a “Discover” feed. It is up to you to compile and curate the best feeds for your tastes! What you see on Bluesky is curated by you! You will have to pin feeds to your home page and look through them whenever you want to. To help others find posts you like, please use the “Repost” function! This will help get these posts to other people’s following feed. Bluesky’s native “Discover” feed is not the best, so if you would like a better feed, I would recommend looking for custom “Discover” or “For You” feeds that serve the function that you’re looking for. You can also use and create Lists to find posts. Pinning a list is basically like pinning a feed. Some users also create “Starter Packs” which contain a list of users they recommend for you to follow, if you don’t know where to start following.

Page 3 How to Get People to See Your Posts: You will want to follow and interact with other users so that people can find you! Some discovery on Bluesky is done through users manually searching recent posts as well. TAG AND DESCRIBE YOUR WORK (if you post art)! It is highly recommended and it is the norm on Bluesky to use alt text on images, both for accessibility and for searchability/moderation. Alt text is searchable, so you can use it to describe images and people will be able to find your post based on the words written in your alt text. Keywords and tags is how some feeds pick up posts, so using these properly will help your work be shown on feeds, which will be shown to people. It is also good etiquette to use tags and keywords so that people can mute these keywords if they don’t want to see the content you make. Not using keywords can get you blocked when otherwise muting would’ve worked.

I wrote down some of my advice for how to use bluesky for anyone who's just gotten here :0 I wrote this down quickly so it doesn't quite cover everything, but I hope this helps
