A big part of the reason why I prefer a written message to a call as a first contact attempt is because I will not do this. If I'm out of the office in a public space, and you ring, I'm going to have to call you back. If you message me, you'll probably get me right away.

I'm not this extreme, but I prefer (and usually get) a written message first. I'm happy to do voice calls, but I hate being forced to switch contexts immediately (if I'm available) or play phone tag (if I'm not). Any interaction that ends up involving voicemail is bound to be a terrible experience.
