my theory has been that
1) the internet has made a lot of people opposed to being wrong or seeming uninformed
2) people don't want their biases exposed
OR
3) people don't want to seem like they aren't diverse in their taste so claiming they like "girl stuff" and it's not actually ruins that
yeah I mean I know the BIGGEST reason is stereotypes but I really do think it could also be an issue with the actual knowledge of the word and context breaching containment if you will
yeah I'm like is this just how divorced animanga fans are from any semblance of knowledge about the words they use???
I mostly wonder this because people get REALLY upset if you correct them and try to diminish any of the labels to begin with and apply it to like any media and TBH that's a more recent fandom characteristic
i wonder if part of the reason the word "shoujo" is so grossly misused by english audiences is because people think it's just a fan term with no context much like how "fujoshi" has started getting used

i mean I saw people even say that Tamon was problematic... I genuinely think part of the reason english audiences can't handle anything is because of the "online stigma" of liking anything that could be deemed uncouth to their fandom peers so they need to posture their purity
I really appreciated how it was more of a realistic approach to removing screens because sometimes when I see videos about that kind of challenge I think it's diving too far into the deep end
tbh I do think there are shoujo that still have the edge that they used to but not much comes from Kodansha shoujo magazines (betsufure especially lost its edge, My Girlfriend's Child is the only thing recent that brought it back KINDA)
