Pretty cool how big everyone was on eliminating remote working so we can spend unprecedented amounts of income on car juice to do work we could just as easily do without the commute

Of course Platner knew what his Nazi symbol was. It changed his life. His tattoos were reviewed when he asked to return active duty; a trained officer looked for violations. The sleeve tattoos were OK. The Totenkopf was not. Platner chose to keep it. Somewhere in DoD, it’s all written down. 5/

Tumbling down a rabbit hole and being reminded that Cofer Black was Vice Chairman of Blackwater for a few years. What a professionally sketchy guy.

It Wasn't Fascism All Along Conservatism was a distinct ideology but it is dead and it is not coming back.

Important and correct by @polphilpod.bsky.social Toby Buckle at @liberalcurrents.com Liberal Currents.

The "all conservatism was always already Trumpist and fascist" line is ultimately a way to normalize Trump, and should be resisted.

Maybe this is just me, but I kind of think massive military operations, in which we're demanding unconditional surrender as the outcome, probably should be authorized by Congress.

This isn't me defending Graham Platner, but he didn't get the tattoo in question while he was in uniform. He got it while a private military contractor for Blackwater, which is its own huge red flag.

"Soldiers running around with supremacist tattoos" get screened before joining or kicked out.

The year is 2001. The economy is in recession and we are at war in the Mideast.
The year is 2008. The economy is in recession and we are at war in the Mideast.

From the 1960s to the 2020s the only industry fully deleted was elevator operator, so we know we could have something like never ending economic expansion if only the government would, in the words of an endless parade of conservative talking heads, "get out of the way."

Just going off the numbers, no. I've watched it several times, and read the book it's based on.

Also, there are simply no logistical means for a submarine to offer aid to the shipwrecked they leave. There were many conversations about this reality back in 1915 or so.

The fact that he gets to stiff-arm responsibility for military matters because that's what "his" Generals do makes it easier for him to not back down. He had to maintain some veneer of economic intelligence regarding tariffs that led to TACO that doesn't apply to bomb-dropping.

"Are we at war?"
"No, not really. It's a special military action."
"What's our goal?"
"Total political capitulation of a foreign nation-state."
"For which we're using military force?"
"Of course! Won't get capitulation, otherwise!"
"Bro, that's a war."

06.03.2026 14:18 πŸ‘ 4 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Further, please explain to the American people that we're not "at war" so there's no reason for Congress to authorize this action, while we demand the total capitulation of another nation state. That's unequivocally a war aim. There is no other description.

06.03.2026 14:16 πŸ‘ 5 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Also, given that the only ally we've got in this war has shown a willingness to flatten their own territory in pursuit of a genocide for which their leader is still dodging international courts, what's the actual incentive for any Iranian leader to surrender?

06.03.2026 14:15 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I dunno, man, seems like our melding of GWOT "kill all the leaders, every last one, as soon as they poke their heads up" tactics with demanding the absolute capitulation from a nation-state, which would have to be offered by a leader who can speak on behalf of said state, are incompatible.

I'm not going to accuse Stephen Ambrose of being a particularly good historian, but there's a thing he included his a couple of his narratives that many US Soldiers on the eastern front describe experiences with duds, but no German soldiers he interviewed had one. It's like fascists suck at QA/QC.

I'm not a troop anymore, but I would nonetheless rather troops not have hastily assembled high explosives meant to get off the line as fast as possible to satisfy an administration that has shown they are very bad at quality assurance & control.

It’s not a war you fucking idiots. It’s an exchange of violence between two polities to impose a political outcome through conflict.
