This is fascinating study of an extraordinary dataset. Norwegian registry data captures marriages and long-term cohabitation. 8% of Norwegians are connected! I would have felt awkward dating an ex of my ex's new partner but hadn't clocked this is a widespread (but softening) implicit taboo.

a) is just due to network percolation, where enough formation and dissolution events will create a sparse large, network structure without internal connectedness.
b) Is likely part of the normative shifts in the population, where the threshold for forming an "illegal" partnership declined. 4/x
FINDINGS:
a) 8% of Norwegians are connected to each other in a giant, sparse network component of family formation and dissolution.
b) Partnership four-cycles exist, are very rare, and the likelihood of ever being in a four-cycle increases over birth cohorts! 3/x
In the classic Chains of Affection paper in AJS, Bearman et al found that four-cycles -- two couples switch partners -- were non-existent in a network of high schoolers romantic ties. They also found a giant component of exes exes.
I take their ideas to the full network of Norwegian partnerships.
