In 1952, she commissioned Langston Hughes to write an essay for it, though this was never completed — her project came to an abrupt halt as the 1950s Red Scare reached a fever pitch. As Sands explains, she, like many fellow Jewish refugees in the New York City jazz scene (including the founders of Blue Note Records), was an outspoken leftist. Furthermore, jazz was the site of radical integration, as Model’s images of a jubilant, racially mixed 1956 party, for example, demonstrate. Laying out the “racialized dynamics” of McCarthy’s attacks, Sands explains “how deeply McCarthyist red-baiting was intertwined with anti-Black racism” as he persecuted civil rights champions under the guise of fighting Communism.

That clattering post-punk sound that crawled out of mid-80s Industrial Britain was unique, chaotic and glorious. Quite how Sheffield’s Tinned Meats recreated that and invested it with gorgeous melodies, angular rhythms, and magnificently uncanny lyrics is beyond me. I'm just happy they did.

If Iran killed 140+ girls in a school bombing in a million years does anyone think this wouldn’t be a front page story in NYT? Does anyone think this would be an A11 story? Does anyone think they would be so faux anal retentive about attributing responsibility for five days? Obviously not.
The claim isnt that the NYT didnt cover it, it’s that they did not make it a news priority which is historically determined by placement on the front page—which it wasn’t. It was A11, the US/Israel responsibility was obscured in a fog of faux confusion & framed as an “Iranian state media” allegation

It’s not disingenuous to point out that the NYT did not run a single front page story of the Minab bombing. You don’t dispute this claim because it’s true. And the story that you reference on your webpage does not attribute blame to US/Israel and frames it as an allegation by “Iranian state media”

Even suspending disbelief long enough to entertain that he didn't know the tattoo's history when he got it, his immediate reaction not being shock, horror, and rushing to remove it upon realizing it's Nazi origins speaks volumes.

This LP has puzzled collectors for decades: who was Steve Hernández, the shadowy figure behind this powerful orchestra including top Puerto Rican and New York musicians? Arranged by Ray Santos and featuring vocalist Vitín Avilés, the album delivers a unique mix of mambo, boogaloo, descarga, proto-salsa and 1950s big-band swing. A rare bridge between the Palladium sound and the emerging salsa era. Originally self-released and barely promoted, the record became a cult favorite among DJs and collectors.
