The #HOLOtag images microscopic #plankton on the flyβfrom micron to millimetre scaleβcapturing #biodiversity in high resolution and with minimal disturbance, revealing the living pulse of our ocean - from plankton to predators. Stay tuned.
It's official: @alexnimmosmith.bsky.social & I have launched the HOLOtag for ocean observation on a micro-AUV! An ultra-compact plankton imaging sensor, the #HOLOtag is a real breakthrough in sensor innovation and now backed by the @royalsociety.org ππ¦π§ͺ

Wind turbines affect local wind regime, esp. downwind from them. How that affects marine ecosystems, through wind-related features like upwelling, is something we are still learning. But aspects like surface primary productivity seem to be affected. π§ͺπ

Moments like this also remind us why we do what we do, highlighting the value of #innovation in tackling the challenges of biodiversity monitoring at scale: from key ecosystem drivers incl the smallest and most abundant life in our ocean (phyto-and zooplankton) to the most vulnerable ocean giants.

This PhD was to be tailored to your own interests, integrating novel tools like drones, remote sensing, ocean profiling with plankton imaging & eDNA! Thank you for all your support and help with this one, @bd-stew.bsky.social , @peterimiller.bsky.social et al. Looking forward to the next chapter!
Iβm truly sorry to those who applied and didnβt get funding β I know how much hard work, time & dedication goes into these applications βI genuinely appreciate every single effort. A reminder: the focus was on monitoring the recovery of the majestic Atlantic bluefin #tuna in Southwest UK waters.
Thanks to the @plymuni.bsky.social SERVO scheme for helping bring this project to life and putting it forward. The scheme allocated 3 studentships across 9 fantastic projects. Unfortunately, we werenβt successful this time, but the idea is very much alive.

π§ͺππ¦ When Marine Science Gets Eel-y Interesting ;) After 4 months, our Sonardyne ADCP frame was due for recoveryβbut it had an unexpected resident! We @plymbiomarsci.bsky.social retrieved the frame only to find a large conger eel inside. Watch its dramatic escape! π
It's incredible to see this taking shape as it's the sensor Alex and I have dreamed up many years ago and today we can go out and collect data - just like that! :) I'm very grateful for these opportunities. Watch this space! π€
