Wind turbines affect local wind regime, esp. downwind from them. How that affects marine ecosystems, through wind-related features like upwelling, is something we are still learning. But aspects like surface primary productivity seem to be affected. 🧪🌊

Moments like this also remind us why we do what we do, highlighting the value of #innovation in tackling the challenges of biodiversity monitoring at scale: from key ecosystem drivers incl the smallest and most abundant life in our ocean (phyto-and zooplankton) to the most vulnerable ocean giants.

I’m truly sorry to those who applied and didn’t get funding — I know how much hard work, time & dedication goes into these applications —I genuinely appreciate every single effort. A reminder: the focus was on monitoring the recovery of the majestic Atlantic bluefin #tuna in Southwest UK waters.

Thanks to the @plymuni.bsky.social SERVO scheme for helping bring this project to life and putting it forward. The scheme allocated 3 studentships across 9 fantastic projects. Unfortunately, we weren’t successful this time, but the idea is very much alive.

🧪🌊🦑 When Marine Science Gets Eel-y Interesting ;) After 4 months, our Sonardyne ADCP frame was due for recovery—but it had an unexpected resident! We @plymbiomarsci.bsky.social retrieved the frame only to find a large conger eel inside. Watch its dramatic escape! 👇

It's incredible to see this taking shape as it's the sensor Alex and I have dreamed up many years ago and today we can go out and collect data - just like that! :) I'm very grateful for these opportunities. Watch this space! 🤗
