A Day in the Life of an Ensh*ttificator
A Day in the Life of an Ensh*ttificator YouTube video by ForbrukerrΓ₯det - Norwegian Consumer Council

"Make people dependent enough, and then make it shitty"

Still giggling at this hilarious video from the Norwegian Consumer Council "A Day in the Life of an Ensh*ttificator" which seems a perfect embodiment of Silicon Valley and tech generally these days

The Pentagon Wants to Use AI to Kill People Without Checks. Is Anthropic Really Pushing Back? Anthropic’s rupture with the Pentagon has sparked public backlash and soaring support. But an AI ethics expert warns against 'falling for the theatrics.'

I wrote about Anthropic, OpenAi and the Pentagon, quoting a post by @timnitgebru.bsky.social who encouraged people not to β€œfall for the theatrics.”

More than 600 Kenyans in Cambodia, who say they were victims of human traffickers, have appealed to the courts in Nairobi to force their government to bring them home.
Cambodia's interior ministry said it recovered them during a crackdown on online fraud centers run by organized criminals.
According to the Kenyans, they were tricked into traveling to Cambodia with the promise of legitimate employment but were then made to work in heavily-guarded compounds where they were subject to attacks and abuse, including stabbings.
Cambodian authorities have given them until February 28 to leave the country or face potential imprisonment but they say they cannot afford flights back to Kenya.

This is also the political economy of digitalisation.

Try to withdraw a large amount of cash from a bank and you'll understand why guys are so pressed by that Karauri video.

It's KYC for me but none for them and they are the PEPs the banks created these things for in the first place

The average cost to mine a single Bitcoin is now over $90,000. The price of Bitcoin has collapsed to $67,000. Everyone mining Bitcoin at the moment is losing a fortune.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

can't help but think there is probably a corrosive effect of having sex trafficker-elite emails unveiled for months on end as one of the biggest cultural/news stories of the last yearβ€” unearthing an inexcusable moral rot in the upper echelons of powerβ€”but without any real accountability/justice

In Oregon testimony last year, an agent said two photos of a woman in custody taken with his face-recognition app produced different identities. The woman was handcuffed and looking downward, the agent said, prompting him to physically reposition her to obtain the first image. The movement, he testified, caused her to yelp in pain. The app returned a name and photo of a woman named Maria; a match that the agent rated β€œa maybe.”

Agents called out the name, β€œMaria, Maria,” to gauge her reaction. When she failed to respond, they took another photo. The agent testified the second result was β€œpossible,” but added, β€œI don’t know.” Asked what supported probable cause, the agent cited the woman speaking Spanish, her presence with others who appeared to be noncitizens, and a β€œpossible match" via facial recognition. The agent testified that the app did not indicate how confident the system was in a match. β€œIt’s just an image, your honor. You have to look at the eyes and the nose and the mouth and the lips.”

This is like a scene out of Monty Python.

ICE agents get a name back from face recognition and multiple agents start calling out "Maria! Maria!" to see if a woman in custody reacts. (Presumably if she does that's a match???)

It didn't work, so they ran the app again and got another name.

There is no Nairobi County Hall beat for example, even though it is one of the most important and corrupt institutions in the country. Athletes depend on social media to let fans know that they have events happening. Twitter is one of the main news sources. There is no national discourse.

Where are you supposed to find up and coming people now that the big guys are crowding them out?

We’re watching a shift where AI simulates the cohesion and reinforcement that used to require an entire online community. A single person can now build a complete parallel reality with nothing more than a prompt window. Which seems bad.

If Trump announces a new and illegal regime change war against Venezuela tonight pay attention to which elected Democrats stay silent and don’t vociferously oppose and condemn him for it - and then make sure those Dems are subjected to primary challenges next year.
