In the '90s, a guy named Frank Perreti made a play at being the Christian Stephen King by writing a novel about a group of townspeople whose sins manifested as oozing rashes as their skin. Eventually, the ooze summoned a big dragon who ate them all. Anyway.

The obvious thing here is that these are addiction behaviors, which makes me wonder about the intermittent reinforcement schedule and the built-in delays (currently conceived of as eventually fixable bugs) as significant factors.

the way a child can go from being pale and lethargic, clutching a bucket in their bed at 7:30am, to bounding around the house asking for a meal by 10am should be studied

Lloyd Smucker has harmed his reputation all on his own. This is a laughable waste of time and resources. lancasteronline.com/news/local/c...

Contrast this with Shirley Jackson:

β€œThe actual act of taking pen to paper…occurred on snatched time, in common spaces. Jackson’s children recall her writing in the middle of baking, perched on a kitchen stool or wedged at a folding table in the dining room.”

Which takes the greater discipline?

Come back | everything changes A habit is built on the movement of return.

"A habit is built on the movement of return. It’s coming back to something, again and again, in precise rhythms or otherwise, that transforms an effort into a habit, an act of will into an act of way." everythingchanges.us/blog/come-ba...

Silver lining of forgetting that daycare is closed today is not having to plan my entire day around when I will pump or wash any pumping/bottle related items. Was only mentally prepared to share the house with one (almost) self-sufficient child though.

These goofy billboards were up when i lived in Myanmar. They explicitly justify authoritarian force by blaming everything on β€œexternal elements” and β€œforeign nations.” Just something to think about when they use the words β€œforeign invaders” to justify assassinating an American poet.

y'know, if tech companies weren't so fired up to call every single thing "AI" it would be a lot easier to distinguish "ML spam filter that is well-sandboxed and tuned on your emails" from "giant context and IP-eroding foundation model that makes people paranoid and unhappy"
