Does womenβs health need sex-specific algorithms? In a paper just out in Big Data & Society (bigdatasoc.bsky.social) we at the GenderSci Lab warn against the growing use of so-called βpinkβ and βblueβ algorithms, arguing that they risk embedding biological sex essentialist assumptions into medicine.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death internationally, and the US fares worse than many peer countries. Increasing gender equality may be one way to improve population health.
Figures depicting predicted values of CVD outcomes for men by state-level structural sexism values and racialized identity.
We also found that the relationship varied across racialized identity, with most harm felt by Black and White people.
Image shows a screenshot of the first page of the article, State-Level Structural Sexism and Cardiovascular Disease Outcomes in the United States, published in Social Science & Medicine
Our new study shows that living in states with higher levels of structural sexism was associated with worse cardiovascular disease outcomes for both men and women, especially for diabetes and stroke.
