UPDATE: Staff at the ICE concentration camp in Dilley, Texas have begun raiding the dormitories of kids and their parents to confiscate and destroy letters from the children. This is in response to the ace reporting by @micarosenberg et al for ProPublica:

- 7 year old imprisoned by ICE for 70 days in a concentration camp in Texas.
Today, after @propublica.org published this story, the camp was raided to confiscate letters from the children.

NEW: Without USAID funding to help buy food for refugees, the World Food Program rushed to prioritize families based on need, determining that only half the population would get food.
Refugees learned which half they were in from a number stamped on the back of their ration card.

These plans must be opposed and an ethical alternative called for.
Overall, what is being envisioned is a punitive and hostile approach that will make genuine refugees’ insecure, separated from families, and increasingly vulnerable to forced deportation and potential prospective human rights abuses. 5/n
The use of military facilities to house asylum seekers and the expansion of enforced returns will expand a network of incarceration and deportation. 4/n
The limiting of appeals, and the restrictions of applications of human rights to a private and family life and against torture and cruel and degrading treatment, will remove safeguards against human rights abuses. 3/n
The restriction in family reunion, will deny the ability of refugee families to be together. The seizure of refugee assets will see the government taking valuable items from refugees. 2/n
The reduction in leave to remain, and restriction of routes to permanent settlement, will make genuine refugees’ situation seriously precarious in the UK, with them and their families being under continual threat of deportation. 1/n
Now I’ve had a chance to fully read the government’s plans in their asylum and returns policy statement, my initial assessment is the plans are dangerous and completely unacceptable. A thread:
