Yeah, I tried to convince them it was new, and other students understood it was. I also noticed some who thought there was a ground militia we'd be allied with and a pro-American leader to install whom I just didn't know about.
I will say that a portion of my students seemed to mentally fold this war into "U.S. doing some bombing in the Middle East again" and not that significant

Iranian media has confirmed, Ali Khamanei has been killed. The US/Iran gave the 86 year old ayatollah, who had been tortured by the Shah's govt and was a leading figure in the govt since 1979, the death he deeply wanted - they made him a martyr for the revolution.
