At B.C.’s universities, a violent RCMP unit showed up to spy on student Palestine protests.

Happy Holi, New York City!

Growing up, Holi was more than a celebration of spring – it was a chance to embrace joy & revel with family.

It's been a long winter & spring is much anticipated. I wish New York City's Hindu communities an extra colorful Holi – may the warmth come soon enough.

Putting on a platform where kids can stumble upon it for free with crudely inserted ad breaks is honestly the ideal distribution method for this film.

A man asked me last night what publishing needs to do for literary fiction to begin appealing to men again. I said, as nicely as I could, that, with over 2,000 books published every Tuesday, of which many would appeal to men, it’s not a publishing problem, it’s a men problem.

When people bring up something like 'you can't even define what a woman is' I always think about the moment when Socrates returns to the cave and can't give simple accepted answers anymore so people kill him. Beauvoir wrote that sex is a simple question for those who like simple answers.

When someone says β€žScientists do not want you to knowβ€œ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

"The war launched against Iran by the United States and Israel is a war of choice and of hubris. There is scarcely even the pretence that it was compelled by evidence of an Iranian dash for a bomb or an imminent attack. Such claims do not survive scrutiny; they barely withstand repetition."

β€œCompiling” is also integral training for life as a teacher and syllabus-builder.

There is no shortcut to doing hard things; you just have to do them, and then keep doing them until you get better at doing them.

This completely misunderstands the research process including the point of doing literature reviews. Claude’s β€œanalysis” treats research as paint by numbers regurgitation of pre-existing work.

Kustov & folks who share these views need to give up their jobs in favor of those who want to research.

IMO, the majority of pro-AI arguments made by academics are about the economics of working in a neoliberal university. The constant call is to do more with less--less time, less funding, less peace of mind. AI promises to "solve" these problems, but I'd argue it'll actually intrench them further.

"Great question, Croesus! While my status as a delphic model prevents me from elaborating further, I can affirm that by going to war with Persia you *will* destroy a mighty empire. Would you like me to write this up as a set of daily affirmations, or perhaps you'd like a list of mighty empires?"

Only that historian will have the gift of fanning the spark of hope in the past who is firmly convinced that even the dead will not be safe from the enemy if he wins. And this enemy has not ceased to be victorious.
