They write such lovely, creative and funny translations! It's genuinely such a joy to read them! It gives me hope to see all those clever jokes and how much fun some of them are having. But why can't they re-read what they wrote before sending it to me?

Every year I tell my students "use spellcheck before submitting the final project", every year they look like me like I'm stupid for suggesting something this obvious, and inevitably every year roughly half of the group submits their final projects WITHOUT using spellcheck.

There might be no formal requirements, but the market is so competitive that in practice people are still usually required to have a relevant degree and also exp. in translation. Agencies often expect CAT tool knowledge as well. Whoever's calling it a low-investment career is a bit naive imho.

...just adjectives that would be affected – in Polish it’s also certain verb forms, for example. So as long as you have a system that your translators can use flexibly with any string they might need to, it’ll be easy to translate and everybody will be happy 😊

Honestly, I think most of us would be happy with either of those, we're not picky 😁But personally I think the first version (with square brackets) would be faster to work with. Just bear in mind that different languages have different gendered parts of speech, so it's not necessarily... (1/2)

(disclaimer: I work with indie games, for AAA games it's more common to implement separate translations for different genders)

Hi, I can tell you that in Polish we use a lot of weaseling around 🥲In some games where you get to pick the gender of your character devs give translators the option to write different translations for every gender, but it's rare. Most of the time we just find ways to write around gender.

I finally got to read The Clock House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji (wonderfully translated by @tanteikid.bsky.social). My favorite thing about this book series is how at this point there's been multiple murders in those mansions yet people still go there and are surprised when they get murdered.
