The painting depicts the structure of a Penicillium conidiophore, resembling a simplified blue tree with rows of circular spores at the tips of its branches. It includes the stipe (trunk), rami (branches), metulae (sub-branches), phialides, and conidia (spores).

In 2025 I illustrated Penicillium stained with trypan blue. Penicillium fungi are important post-harvest pathogens, for example citrus green mould is caused by Penicillium digitatum.

Got a free gift in my grapes. An actual weevil, likely Phlyctinus callosus based on his looks and the grapes’ South African origin. He’s a long way from home. πŸ‡πŸͺ²

The painting shows a coffee branch, with 10 leaves emerging in pairs, one on each side of the stem. Counting down from the terminal bud, the base of the fourth leaf pair has a cluster of finishing flowers, the fifth leaf pair has seven green coffee berries, and where the sixth pair would have been, there are a further six berries. The adaxial (upper) surface is displayed for eight of the 10 leaves, while the abaxial (lower) surface is shown for the remaining two.

There are yellow chlorotic patches on the adaxial (upper) leaves, and dark brown necrotic areas in the largest lesions.

On the abaxial (lower) leaves, bright orange areas in the centre of the yellow lesions indicate areas of sporulating rust.

The painting shows a tomato stem, with two compound leaves and a sprig of tomatoes which are just beginning to ripen. The first symptoms of Fusarium wilt often occur when the fruit begins to mature.

On the lower compound leaf, the leaflets have turned yellow along one side of the petiole. The upper compound leaf is severely wilted, with some leaves turning brown.
