Microscope with one objective dipping into a petri dish. a fibreoptic ringlight is clamped to the objective.
Black fungi on a submerged leaf
I should be tidying up my desk - but I am trying out new methods on the microscope. Photographing aquatic fungi with epi-illumination and a dipping objective. This mitigates reflections from the surface.
There are still some specular reflections so I will have to include polarisation.

Matschinger Apfel in einer BlechschΓΌssel mit KompostmΓΌll

Klingt wie ein Auftakt zu einem spannenden #MibiFlausch war dann aber doch nur ein Matschinger Apfel. @malo82.bsky.social

A tiny example of the Goldeneyes lichen or Teloschistes chrysophthalmus, about 5mm across with only one fruit or apothecia. The fruit is circular, golden orange and surrounded by cilia that look like eyelashes, which is where it gets its common name. The lichen was found on Hawthorn on Devils Dyke, part of the South Downs, in Sussex.

A good day to check on the Goldeneyes lichen - Teloschistes chrysophthalmos - on Devils Dyke on the South Downs above Brighton - lots found - from a tiny one with a single 'eye', ones with no 'eyes' to lots of 'eyes'. #lichen #lichenGBI @friendssouthdowns.bsky.social @nationaltrust.org.uk

It has an auto on maybe that's the culprit. Even if I do not move it much and it is on the desk without being touched.
I don't keep it in a box (because I'm lazy so option one is unlikely)

Mahr digital calipers with the LCD very dim as a first sign of draining battery.
My Mahr/MarCal digital caliper eats CR2032 batteries for lunch (lasts not even 2 wk with occasional use). Is this normal or is it broken somehow?
I cannot even remember when I last changed the battery in the cheap WorkZone calipers.

Harder to observe with a 10x lens. Tend to not react well with spot tests. Difficult to fit under a microscope.

Now for the next problems - triggering the camera from either software or arduino. The alpha 7 (R IV) only accepts trigger via usb-c *cough* sony multiport or bluetooth...
maybe via glibphoto2 in micromanager but I was not yet successful with building mm in ubuntu.

Large screen view of the sony alpha camera, small screen the basler camera with micromanager - now with a fairly usable image.
I provisionally attached the mirror with a minimum amount of sticky tape on 2 corners and left out the holder part. And that worked 2/2.

Urs, thank you! I tried loosening the screws and at first it did not change anything, but then I noticed that someone had removed the leaf spring (the mirror is maybe thicker than spec?) and the 2 rubber pads in the filter holder were pressing against the mirror. 1/2

I will try. Thank you!
It is a 50/50 plate, not optimal for splitting to a second camera but it is what I have lying around (from a big box of optomechanics/optics stuff I bought off a startup liquidation).

I am building a custom setup with a consumer mirrorless camera and a c-mount guide cam (for triggering) to di large area macro photography
Unfortunately the mirror introduces a lot of astigmatism.
Is there some option to mount a beam splitter prism in the cubes for dichroic filter sets?

I have a weak spot for good optics (mostly for looking at small stuff up close) and can totally understand that it had to happen (and would like to have a look through one someday).
Have fun!

A set up game of CoraQuest - a dungeon made from multiple 3x3 in cards with hero and monster standees and lots of meeples
Boxes of the CoraQuest boardgame and Expansion keep on questing.
We played through the final 3 games of a CoraQuest campaign today. It was fun ! A nice progression of power - in the end we just smashed through the simple mobs and the bosses. Maybe we have do dial up the difficulty the next time.
