thank you! Yes, that's a lesson many of us have learned the hard way (me included).

βThe point is, not all efforts or pains are the same. While running involves pains of various sorts, the goal is not to uncritically embrace all pain for its own sake.

Thank you!
I have been working on a bunch of things but I keep coming back to this article from Sabrina Little. Even if you are NOT a runner, I suggest you give it your time and attention.
Thank you!
No pain, no gain? Absolutely not.

Character matters.
Listening to Olympic commentators discuss fear and risks, figuring out what risks are worth undertaking, etc. This is like catnip for a virtue ethicist. I am having the time of my life over here.
That sport is awesome!
Mentioning the existence of Olympic ice luge and the Iditarod repeatedly in casual conversations to convince my family that ultrarunning is a reasonable hobby.
Back in my day, the first track meets of the year were for rust-busters, not world records.
"Alongside running, classical texts have been a critical source of edification in my life. These four books have shaped me a great deal. They teach me about what it means to be human, and they have special relevance for runners." β @sabrinablittle.bsky.social

Thanks so much!
This is a great list. Also buy Littleβs book βThe Examined Runβ if you are a runner, a thinker, someone who does both or neither. Itβs valuable because it provides insight into your why regardless of your how.
Your own misadventures may seem trivial once you read about Odysseusβ 10-year trek home full of unanticipated obstacles. These include a cave nap with a Cyclops and a steep, mid-race descent into actual hell.
New column! Great Textsβ¦for Runners.

Things sure do feel politically hopeless at the moment.
Thank you! Almost two full weeks off for one misstep on ice. Glad to be mostly okay now.
If you go for a short run, remember to budget enough time for after the run for when your toddler greets you with hugs and tears like you have been lost at sea for 40 years.
It has taken a while and I have a few R&Rs to squash before I make real progress, but I am finally scheming up my next book project and am so excited.
The first thing people ever compliment about children is their cuteness, which is annoying when you're trying to teach them to be substantial people and they keep having their attention turned back to their appearance.
Wow! I had no idea.
Ending the year with about 3,600 miles, which is within 30 miles of my totals from 2024 and 2023. Apparently I am as consistent with my running schedule as Kant was with his daily walks, and he was such a fun guy, so...
Thank you! Seriously!
Thanks, Nita!
Thank you!
A few days ago, I was celebrating 6ish months averaging 80ish mileage with a baby, two other kids, and a new job in a new state. Then I slipped hard on black ice and haven't been able to run in 3 days.

@sabrinablittle.bsky.social shares some of the running books sheβs used to keep the intellectual catabolism of long runs from eating her alive.

I wrote about why runners should read before races, and I included a list of some of my favorite books from the past year.
