Three-panel meme showing a woman speaking and a man listening from behind a wall. In the first panel, she says “Masks don’t work,” and the man replies “Be honest.” In the second, she says “I don’t want to wear one,” and he again says “Be honest.” In the final panel, she says “I just don’t wanna be reminded of the scary pandemic,” and the man responds, “Thank you.”
This is what it really comes down to.
Masks are a reminder the pandemic isn’t over.
🔹COVID is airborne
🔹Each infection carries cumulative risk
🔹Long COVID has no cure
🔹The pandemic isn’t over
🔹Wearing a mask is still one of the best ways to protect yourself and others
Stay informed. Stay safe.

It's been a crazy busy few months, and I was about 3 months behind in updating my media page. Getting back to it, I was reminded of this lovely podcast experience:

“The Victorian Parliament has passed laws banning unnecessary medical interventions on children born with variations in sex characteristics.”
This is great news! We need our laws to affirm bodily autonomy, especially for intersex people enduring institutional violence.

Author wearing a rainbow dyed t-shirt takes a photo of them showing off their book, The Emotions of LGBT Rights and Reforms: Repairing Law.
My book is published! It’s a critical take on how emotions shape conflicts about LGBT rights and repair in equality law, gender recognition, bans on conversion practices, and sex education in schools. I don't know why, but the judge is now citing the historical precedent of Charles I of England. This is an incredibly ominous sign for Yoon.
The sentencing trial for Yoon Suk-yeol will begin in 10 minutes.
shaming people for appearances that don’t appeal to you ain’t the fuck okay—even if it’s genuinely evil middle aged white men you’re shaming!—because the stigma *doesn’t fucking stop with people whose politics you hate*. shame them for their shit fucking politics and evil, leave aesthetics out of it
look. these people care deeply about appearances and superficial appearance and I get it’s very tempting to dunk on the gap between their displays of suppposed strength and health and YOUR perception of their strength and health. but that’s just putting a different wrapper their (shit!) framework.
Pre-ordered!
Thx 👍
We’ve managed similar for all my dentist appts so far (except the lozenges — gotta get some lozenges!).
I think it was probably just one thing too many on top of Already Too Many Things for my partner to think about & organise this time. 😬
(Ugh, I gotta make a dentist appt for myself.)
I just wanna know how long I can reasonably put off wearing an N95 at home after my partner’s dentist appt 😫🫠
(It’s v unlikely that they’ll have had mitigations in place beyond basic dentistry standards =?OK ventilation in treatment room, staff in surgical masks when treating, otherwise ≈nothing 🙃)
I keep reading stuff that says that people infected w COVID can become infectious “from 48 hours before they develop symptoms” (somehow asymptomatic transmission never comes up).
The same info ALSO says that symptoms can start “from 1-14 days after exposure”. 🤦♀️
My kingdom for some graphs! 🙏😫
Study: SARS-CoV-2 RNA found in 39% of hospital air samples during outbreaks, despite good ventilation.
Kirby Institute researchers sampled air and surfaces in a Sydney hospital ED and ICU during two COVID-19 waves (Nov 2023–Jul 2024), detecting SARS-CoV-2 RNA in 39% of aerosol samples collected.
There is a measles outbreak in London, which has been widely reported.
Vaccination rates are low.
And we have been warned that an outbreak could be large.
Some of the reasons are due to misinformation and disinformation. Thankfully the Government appears to be waking up.
A thread.
Schools were never mitigated in the UK for airborne transmission and most children have poor or no vaccine access. This is an ongoing problem and like the US it was an antivaxxer parents group that brought pressure!
Although I actually agree that students got a rough deal during the pandemic, it's very difficult to read these accounts of them taking legal action because they think what was provided was not worth the money they paid for it. The hours and hours spent recording and editing lectures in lockdown...
It was hard. People tried their best. It was unprecedented. Those trying to deliver the teaching were also living through it.
Educators love to educate. The pivot to online teaching was insanely fast. New technologies were learned. Entire new ways of teaching delivery made.
The news about students seeking compensation from universities for COVID teaching has made me quite sad.
I can't say what happened at those universities, or what those student's experience was. My present university did not appear to be in the list.
But what I can say is...
Every whistleblower I've ever spoken to believed (correctly) they were doing their public duty, bc others failed.
None wanted to become a "whistleblower".
Yet they're punished by systems designed to destroy them.
Labor promised to protect them but have only tormented them with inaction & gaslighting
tl;dr: CBP fired a new weapon into domestic airspace that the FAA had previously warned posed grave risk to human life. It did so without warning to FAA and without restricting airspace. FAA restricted airspace in response. White House overruled them. The target turned out to be a party balloon.

Universities buying into this shit under the guise of "equity" makes me SO angry
Equity for my students would be access to the databases and journals we've dropped subscriptions for. It'd be having a paid human to caption videos and make PDFs screen-reader compatible. Not this shit.
…That "Generative AI" does not tell you the truth, that it doesn't give you facts, & that when its outputs conform to factual reality, it's by fucking happenstance. These systems are not all-in-1 answer production machines, they are collections of stats & regularities spat out via fucking dice rolls

Myself and @sesmith.lol and others were interviewed for the Lancet’s obituary of our friend Alice. <3
“Our most interesting finding is not that volcanoes are implicated in dynastic change but that the impact of climatic shock depends on how stable a society was in the lead up to that shock.” (gift article)
“The findings show that vaccination only partially reduces the risk of death and post-acute sequelae, suggesting that reliance on it as a sole mitigation strategy may not most optimally reduce the risk of the long-term health consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our results emphasize the need 🧵
