Basically, this random fool accused someone of witchcraft, and the accused was polite about the matter. Because an accusation of witchcraft requires the accused to exercise extreme diplomacy. Vigilantes abound, and the accused doesn't want to provoke an escalation. The witch hunt continues.

Dad dares to go out with teen daughter in public, gets accused of human trafficking π reason.com/2026/03/02/c...
The cops, of course, commended the guy who gave them the totally baseless tip and blasted out the dad & girlβs pics on social media

Insane busybody behavior, but there are also vanishingly few social situations where calling the cops is likely to make things better. Responding to the uncomfortable of unfamiliar by calling in men with guns is a deeply-rooted social sickness.

I think the media should have run a picture of "Logan" (the man who called in the false tip after actually speaking to the Puddles) - although I suspect he probably values his privacy and wouldn't want to be publicly outed as a fool

The common thread is viewing the human body as a factory, and humans as widgets. They encourage us to view each other this way, to worry about "who's gonna work in the nursing home when I'm 101?" I would rather learn how to take better care of myself, thanks.

That, yeah. And there is also a reactionary conversation about birth rate in Japan, S Korea, etc....and in parts of society where the concern is not racial, where it's more economic. In every case, one common feature: +

Pro-tip. If you want to do collaborative writing find someone in a different time zone. You can send off a draft and wake up the next day to a revised version in your inbox. Also less likely to both be working on it at the same time so you can avoid horrible Google Docs.

Anyway! Itβs fiction, and the bases are probably a metaphor? Sheβs had her fun playing and canβt play anymore because sheβs pregnant. Is baseball the origin of βplaying the field?β I wouldnβt have understood all this as a kid because these terminologies were not used by people I knew.

Oxfords. Saddle shoes. There were lots of flat shoes available for girls. The story is said to occur in 1928. Not convinced that heels were so high that year. People walked a lot.

The Laughing Man is one that went over my head as a kid. It's not, as I then thought, a weird story about pesky little boys. It seems now to be a story about courtship(s) and ....unplanned pregnancy, more of Mary's POV than I had imagined.
