One thing we should be taking away from the fascist crisis is that careful research on the real world is extremely fucking important. Bare minimum that work needs to be funded & expanded for us to have the information & tools necessary to cast off this regime & create a livable world from its ashes.

Israel is bombarding, literally bombarding, two Middle East capitals, Beirut and Tehran, killing 100s of civilians, and yet the US and UK media continue to portray Iran as the threat to the region.

Israel has nukes, but Iran is the nuclear threat.

We live in Orwellian times.

With the Ocean Included, the Social Cost of Carbon Doubles - Eos A new calculation includes ocean ecosystems when assessing the monetary impact of climate change.

The social cost of carbon tells policymakers how much climate change is costing humanity. But until now, calculations disregarded the ocean almost entirely.

For Black women with Tourette syndrome, long-standing invisibility meets viral attention Their journey to diagnosis is often marked by doubt and confusion, which have not abated as a controversy from an awards show ceremony continues to unfold.

Oh, I have been waiting for this piece. The BAFTAs generated a whole mess and tons of stigma and hurtful stereotypes about Tourette's. @slooterman.bsky.social interviews Black women with Tourette's around it.

Hard not to see this as deliberate political disinformation central to a key wedge issue targeted at a large voting block with potential language limitations early in a municipal election season.

In other words, lying on purpose so you can win.

Twice. #Vancouver

A few months ago I sent an American friend a list of small-mid-sized BC cities with maternity ward staff shortages that I thought would be her vibe. She picked one she thought would be good for her kid and applied. Within two days her application was fast-tracked.

Who’s Deciding Where the Bombs Drop in Iran? Maybe Not Even Humans. Behind last week’s scrum between the Trump administration and Anthropic lies a deeper question of how warfare is conductedβ€”and whether accountability even exists anymore.

Truly dystopic.

"we are witnessing the fullest expression of the most inhumane weapons of the century: Autonomous bombs and missiles. Their β€œautonomy” refers to fact that humans need not be in the loop in any meaningful way when deciding where to target or whether to launch such weapons."

Being a Luddite Is Cool and All, but Have You Seen the Hilarious Tapestries These New Looms Are Making? Don’t get me wrong, I’m as invested in keeping my job as the next weaver. When the boss brought in that big new power loom, I was pretty skeptical....

When the boss brought in that big new power loom, I was skeptical. He said once he got it running, we’d be out of a job, so when the boys started talking about breaking into the factory and smashing the thing, I was on board. Until, that is, I saw the funny tapestries it could make.

Another is around copyright. Whenever a hapless person asks someone to share a pattern for free they are often jumped on by a brigade of people shaming them for violating copyright and not supporting designers.

Not strictly Instagram but I can think of a few examples. One is the Ravelry site redesign that some users felt triggered migraines and vision issues. The discourse became very extreme very quickly and resulted in a mass exodus from the site.

In Mark Carney’s Davos speech, he admitted that international law has never been equally applied across the world.

He’s proving that through his own words and actions every time the US and Israel violate international law and he backs them up instead of condemning them.

What do we call what Israel has been doing in the region? It is clearly terror against its neighbours.

Do the human rights of Palestinians not count to Mark Carney? Does it not matter to him that Israel is a rogue state, holding nuclear weapons without signing the Non-Proliferation Treaty?

Let’s say for arguments sake that all goes well (I’m praying for that) and there is a counter revolution in Iran
Do you really think that this administration and the current administration in Israel will tolerate a leftist government that is democratically elected and takes the national resources?

I have little to say tonight beyond expressing horror and grief at America's latest evil act. But Dayal's point here is worth echoing.

I'm old enough to remember that the war in Iraq had a long build up with an attempt to manufacture a case through the UN.

Here, they just bombed.
