I really appreciated the connection this film makes between what is happening in the Arctic and what is happening elsewhere on the continent. Plus, beautiful snowy owls! Worth watching!🦉🦉🦉🦉

A ribbon in the sky…my friend was out looking last night at the northern lights above Kuujjuaq in Nunavik, Quebec.
While January 2026 was a cold one in most of Ontario and Southern Quebec, warmer temperatures dominated elsewhere. Baffin Island and Ellesmere Island had their warmest January on record, with up to 11.4° above normal for Iqaluit - improving last year's record by more than a degree!
Tonight you can get ice to melt for water in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut…One mother complained on social media that melted snow smells of fuel and she doesn’t want to give it to her children. Meanwhile the Hamlet is trying to deliver water to everyone. But the water crisis there is far from over…Temp -27 C.
Melt snow for water?? This shouldn’t be happening…From the Hamlet of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut where people are desperate for clean water.
Beam me up to Kuujjuaq, Nunavik this evening.
Amazing Aurora Borealis display.
Another water crisis is unfolding in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut where there’s been little water delivery for a while due to a water plant pipe issue and truck problems. People are melting ice or doing without. This is a community that already has a lot of food insecurity and is still dark most of the day.
Nunavut will fly Greenland’s flag near the territorial legislature!
And from Arctic Bay, Nunavut…
People up to Pond Inlet in northern Baffin Island also say they saw their skies turn this colour!
Deep pink skies this evening in Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, as shown in this photo from a friend. Great colour!!!!
I ❤️ Greenland.
I would like to be a fly on the wall at the White House today to know what is being said during the meetings between the US and Greenland. So crazy to think this discussion is even taking place. That being said, a positive is an increasing interest in the Arctic and my recent book.
And in Kuujjuaq, Nunavik the northern lights out on a big show last night. I wonder, are the Aurora borealis more frequent and intense or does it seem that way because people have better cameras on their phones and internet to share them?
The sun’s back in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut where it’s -37 C right now. My friends tell me it’s really cold and I know how that temperature feels. You can wear the heaviest parka and the cold just comes through as if you had nothing on at all.
Thanks for still loving my book about my experiences as a journalist in the Arctic during the 1990s, Globe and Mail. Haven’t read it? You can order “Like an iceberg” from Amazon or the link in the G & M.
You won't hear many fond remembrances of Bridget Bardot coming from the Arctic. Her activism caused hardship, poverty and death here. On top of that, she was super racist. I highly recommend watching the documentary Angry Inuk to learn more about that history.
Two people were seriously injured at approximately 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, in an incident that involved Nunavik police. Story by Tom Fennario.
Yet another water crisis in Nunavut but at least the feds stepped in quickly, unlike in the Nunavik community of Puvirnituq where Quebec waited weeks to step in.
Living without clean water in frigid temperatures is terrible, but it’s something that southern Canadians don’t have to worry about.
Thanks to the readers of “Like an iceberg” who are keeping it as one of the No. 1 best sellers in its category on Amazon.
It’s scary to self publish a book when the material is so close to my heart and meaningful to people in Canada’s Arctic.
If you haven’t read it, now’s the time.
Looking for a Christmas present for someone or a good read for yourself! Well, there’s lots of time to order Like an iceberg from Amazon. (And no, the melting ice is actually blue.)
While you were sleeping this is what the northern lights looked like in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut where Elijah Takkiruk took this photo.
I definitely would not go there to hang out!
Congratulations to John Main, Nunavut’s new premier! The questions leading up to today’s vote by the members of the assembly were the best I have ever heard during an election in the assembly since 1999, with focus on social issues and need for more employment among Inuit. John will do a great job.
Thanks to the Globe and Mail for including my book in their “Books we are reading and loving on November.” If you haven’t yet, it’s easy to order on Amazon.
Orcas also appear to find bowhead whales in the Canadian Arctic tasty.
Just when you think things can’t get worse in Nunavik, they do, with charges now laid against the brother of a Salluit man whose twin was killed by police earlier this year.
Wishing I was watching the moonrise this evening near Iqaluit. The ice cream-cotton candy effect…
