Funny. My dad always used to say he didnโ€™t like Arsenal too much - in the 1980s & 90s as they thought they were bigger than they were (not Man U and Liverpool). We still watched them occasionally.

Also caused deep discomfort in the 18th century. Edmund Massey thundered in 1722 that inoculation โ€œusurped an authority founded neither in the Laws of Nature nor of Religionโ€ (Iโ€™m just reading Joel Mokyrโ€™s economic history of Enlightenment Britain)

Agreed, sad news. He interviewed me for uni entry. Tough but fair questions. Then wrapping up, on what seemed a โ€œfun activitiesโ€ portion he noted Iโ€™d been on a youth orchestra tour to Barcelona, adding โ€œwhat did you note of the Catalonia historical revivalist movement?โ€. Not my smoothest response.

Hood was central in the LSE cluster of academics writing about those โ€œaccountabilityโ€ and challenges of accounting & regulation themes (eg Mike Power). Hood had super writing over decades.

Why is CBS focusing on this (in the N. American app)? Thereโ€™s not even a terrorism link.

Completely agree about Reconstruction Era. I remember reading Eric Fonerโ€™s โ€œUnfinished Revolutionโ€ and itโ€™s such a depressing & surprising period (for anyone attracted to teleological progress of history). So many innovations in equality, rights. Then lost for 80-odd years.

Use of the term โ€œknobโ€ clearly marks out @dankaszeta.bsky.social as British. How more obvious can it be?

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

The letters are the actual documents for his writing to her, i.e. Harris replicates these from the letters owned by the Bonham Carter family. Astonishing indiscretion by Asquith.

Hmmmโ€ฆ not sure thatโ€™s right. If thereโ€™s duplication or skill pooling which can be achieved, surely itโ€™s worth exploring.

But building capability and integrating AI *is* reform of the civil service. Not sure ehy you say itโ€™s pointless to have reform, then list reforms needed?

My consumer preference curve for vegetarian food has shifted massively in the last decade thanks to simple education & exploration (curries, baked crispy tofu, Mexican bean dishes etc)

Interesting debate. But @hern.bsky.social - you seem to think about it as a P x Q issue: Govt can increase the price, or restrict quantity. Reasonable for many goods. But with consumer goods, the govt can influence the demand side, ie shift consumer preferences. Like making smoking โ€œless coolโ€ etc

Agree with this. Iโ€™m tired of reading here about who is using Twitter , or complaints about it. Not why BlueSky should be used, to my mind.

I was just googling (but canโ€™t find right now) - how the Govt classify documents and the implications is public. Canโ€™t remember exactly for HMG, but you can look online. But I know global banks Iโ€™ve worked with had classification systems where the top secret category was physical storage only.

One thought I had on an innocent explanation is that it had been misclassified, i.e. it was not actually Top Secret, and shouldnโ€™t therefore be retained only as a physical copy (or didnโ€™t need to be retained after a number of years)? Not unusual (eg for global banks too) to delete the digital copy.

It sounds very strange. But one thought I had on an innocent explanation is that it had been misclassified, i.e. it was not actually Top Secret, and shouldnโ€™t therefore be retained only as a physical copy (or didnโ€™t need to be retained at all after a certain number of years)? But seems unlikely.

Too sensitive to retain digital copies - greater risk of loss.

Some super confidential documents will be stored only as hard copy to prevent cyber attacks. Itโ€™s standard practice (the same also in some banks Iโ€™ve worked in).

I hope you continue to post here. I find the debates and articulation of arguments and analysis by high-quality journalists (eg FT, Guardian, Politico, WSJ), academics and commentators- such as yourself - a great advantage of BlueSky. But it does attract numerous rude people. (Block the worst!)

Thank you for posting here. I appreciate good journalists posting on BlueSky though there does seem to be an inordinate number of vicious responses. An advantage of BlueSky is that you can block people out. (But I can see that might not be a comfort fully).

Agree. A govt with a deliberate direction will look to build a policy platform to win next time. So that means an overall portfolio of โ€œmostly left, a few centristโ€ policies. But one dragged there wonโ€™t have control to build a balanced portfolio. Itโ€™ll be an amalgam of backbenchersโ€™ hopes and fears.

Incredible itโ€™s still like this. I remember 20 years ago (!) during the set up of the legislatively independent Statistics Authority and โ€œofficial statisticsโ€, the feedback on consultation from one banker was โ€œsod that, no point if no one can get the stats, just spend the money fixing the websiteโ€

11.02.2026 00:00 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yes, youโ€™re right - thatโ€™s the issue. Itโ€™s funny, but irritating too.
