4-panel comic, ink and colored pencil, 10x12cm
panel 1: iran. a father and mother say goodbye to their daughters as another mother calls after hers, holding a lunchbox. in the foreground, 4 young girls wearing backpacks talk and smile. 2 are old enough for wearing hijab. caption: "on the morning of february 28, parents in the iranian city of minab dropped off their daughters at shajareh tayyebeh elementary."
panel 2: a single pink children's backpack rests against a ledge on the ground. it is soaked and spattered with blood. this is a reproduction of a photograph taken at the scene. caption: "minutes later, they came running back when an american missile hit the school, killing over 100 little girls and their teachers.
panel 3: a tree against a bright blue sky. on the branches are the faces of young students, on the roots are the faces of teachers. caption: "shajareh means tree. tayyebeh means good, clean, pure, innocent."
panel 4: the tree is now a bloody stump. behind, the students and teachers stand silently weeping, dressed all in white. above, a bloody axe with the flag of the united states of america on the head. caption: "remember how this war began: with the felling of the tree of innocence."

the US & israel kicked this off unprovoked by attacking a school full of kids, i'm not sure why the fuck i'm supposed to see a headline about their murder infrastructure being destroyed and think "oh no, what a bad development"

Digital painting of a human made of light walking away from the camera. Her top half is exposed and she has no hair, but behind her head is an eclipse. Around her wrists and dangling around her waist are large heavy chains with locks, enough chains to form a gownthat spreads out along where ground should be. beneath her there is no floor, but there are bright aqua cracks of light illuminating the chains from below. paint is splattered on the other side of her form and there is a background of space and stars behind that. my water mark is in the bottom left corner and my signature is in the bottom right. this is an art shielded version so the quality may be worse than the full resolution.

To understand what's happening in Iran today, you have to know about the history of Western intervention in the country.

In the early 1900s, the British secured oil rights in the country until 1993, where they only agreed to pay Iran 16% of the total profits.

This was seen as an unfair deal. 🧡

i'm so angry and heartbroken. scores of elementary schoolers murdered. little girls who should be skipping rope and singing songs and drawing pictures and reading books and learning arithmetic. but they won't now, because they're dead.

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads:

The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same...

- Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist

Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.

When I went to Tehran in 2018 for a game conference I hung out with game nerds, music weirdos, and queer folks with tattoos and colored hair, just like I do here. We got vegetarian food and watched goofy uncles play basketball in the park. I sure hope they can live to see a better day.
