Map showing where bombs fell in Cardiff on 18 May 1943.
It’s been great to welcome two classes from Willowbrook Primary in St Mellons to the Archives this week.
They visited to find out more about life in Cardiff during the Second World War. And they also got to take a peek behind the scenes into the strongrooms. We hope you enjoyed!

Last year I surveyed an archive which included these beautiful bound books of letters from a Victorian teenager to her parents & family. After her death aged 14, her mother gathered them together as a memorial. She would do the same when her son died aged 18, seeking to keep their voices alive.

A small notebook laid open showing lined pages. On both pages is a recipe handwritten in pencil. On the left hand page is a recipe for ‘Wakes Cakes’. The recipe is written in list form down the page including amounts of flour, butter, sugar, eggs and currents and the direction to have the “Oven not to Hot”. On the right hand page is a recipe for ‘Pork pies’. It reads “1/2lb crust paste, 6oz meat, to 1lb pie & so on.”
Our latest #NewAccession is the recipe book of Fred Croft, apprentice baker at Wrigley and Son, confectioners, Matlock. Fred took it to France whilst serving during the First World War. It was returned to his family after Fred was killed at the Battle of the Somme.

Hello Bluesky! My new book, THE FIREARM REVOLUTION, is out on 14 April. It’s about how a new technology changed society, and how hard it was to control. Here’s a little thread of what’s inside:

"The Facemaker" by Lindsey Fitzharris on a wooden shelf.
The cover features a collage of WWI soldiers' faces forming a single silhouette.
Notecard below reads: "A gripping read - vivid, fascinating, harrowing yet utterly redemptive and inspiring.
Highly recommended."

Oil portrait of Elizabeth Catherine “Ella” Carmichael seated in a wooden chair beside a writing desk. She wears a long, flowing dress with a sheer, patterned overdress and a beaded necklace, her dark hair pinned up. One arm rests on the chair, the other holds a rolled paper over scattered books and papers, suggesting a literary or scholarly setting.
