Britain’s history is intertwined with empire and colonialism. The UK was forged as a nation-state alongside, and partly to facilitate, the growth of a global empire sustained through violence, brutality and war. It also led to immigration from Britain’s current and former colonies.

How immigrants hoping for a better life in Britain came to be viewed as ‘colonisers’ or ‘invaders’ Immigration is fuelled by people moving for work, family or better opportunities.

I was asked to write a short historical overview of why immigration to the UK has been so often portrayed as "an invasion", and how it's linked to empire and things like the "great replacement" far-right conspiracy theory:
