A scene inside a crowded subway car. A small, yellow anthro tiger in office wear is standing sandwiched between Mith (a beefy teal jackalope) in a tank top and a large muscular white dog (shirtless), who are holding onto a handstrap and handrail, respectively. This position exposes their armpits in close proximity to the shorter tigerβs face, which is visibly flustered (sweating and blushing).

EPITAPH OF RHODANTHION, C. 200 CE. PORCH OF S. MARIA IN TRASTEVERE This long poem in couplets is inscribed on a semicircular slab of marble. Its epigraphy is dignified but not monumental and the whole verse has a humble tone. It starts with a greeting to the passer-by who reads it, hoping it won't take up too much of his or her time. Then it describes the virtues of the deceased, Rhodanthion: "in life he was witty and of a sweet and pleasant nature: he was named after a flower", a rose flower (rhodos = rose, anthos = flower). His wife Victoria, writer of this verse, "loved him with a deep love: a man of such gifts, and day after day throughout his life she honored him with unique loyalty." She swears never to lie with another and "to repeat the embraces exchanged in life after death. Fortunate are both if their death has its glory: those who were joined in marriage are united by death."
For #EpigraphyTuesday we're in the porch of #SantaMaria in #Trastevere, where we find a long #inscription in #verse from about 200 CE, an #epitaph which is a love letter from a wife, Victoria, to her husband Rhodanthion, "Rose-flower", without any status indicators or surnames. #AncientBluesky πΊ
FLOOR MOSAIC OF THE WOMEN'S APODYTERIUM, 1-25 CE. CENTRAL BATHS, HERCULANEUM The main bath complex of Herculaneum had a large section exclusively for men and a much smaller one for women. The changeroom has preserved its barrel-vaulted ceiling ribbbed in plaster, a shelf for leaving one's clothes, a bench clad in cement all around the room, and a dramatic black and white floor mosaic with a wonderful triton occupying most of the pictorial space, a muscular nude man carrying a staff or oar in one hand and a fish, presumably an offering to the disrobing ladies all around him. His legs become snaky tentacles with many curls. Dolphins, an Eros, and a calamaro complete the scene. The triton is proudly naked: not even in a space reserved for women could they escape the omnipresence of the phallus.
#MosaicMonday takes us into the women's section of the Central Baths of #Herculaneum. This is the changeroom or #apodyterium with a splendid ribbed vault (for her pleasure) and a black and white #mosaic depicting a tentacled #triton and some marine life, all from the early C1 CE. #AncientBluesky πΊ
