Ah yes, I'd forgotten that scientific evidence could just be revoked and therefore made untrue. May as well stick your fingers in your ears and say "la la la I'm not listening"

AI simply cannot stand in front of a classroom, gesticulating wildly and writing semi-illegibly on chalkboards, both of which are key to building rapport and convincing your students you are worth learning from

Not sure exactly why your thread made me think of it - maybe because he's trying to think about what the path could be or at least what the infrastructure for the path needs to look like

Have you read Lifehouse by Adam Greenfield? He's sort of wrestling with this idea (perhaps a bit more cynically), but his solution is building what we need for when we inevitably need it, and he sees a lot of good in the little experiments

Wikipedia editors trying to fend off the onslaught of AI crap have crowdsourced some telltale signs of LLM-generated writing; it might be handy for editors and proofreaders generally. Thanks to @ellenrykers.com for pointing me to it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiped...

Baudrillard’s 4 stages of simulacra applied to pumpkin spice

Stage one (next to picture of pumpkin): Initially the sign (image or representation) is a reflection of basic reality

Stage two (next to picture of pumpkin pie): the sign masks a basic reality. The image becomes a distortion of reality

Stage three (next to Starbucks pumpkin spice latte): the sign marks the absence of basic reality. The image calls into question what the reality is and if it even exists

Stage four (next to jug of pumpkin spice flavored coffee mate): the sign bears no relation to any reality whatsoever; it is it’s own pure simulacrum

The people who hung this banner outside the Labour headquarters have been arrested and will face trial in the UK in January.

These are the extreme Orwellian measures Western governments must take to normalize Israel's genocide and war crimes.

My job as a professor is not to create a serviceable worker. My job is to help foster thoughtful citizens or community members.

If that sounds fanciful it’s bc corporate interests have spent decades framing how we talk about education so they don’t take the heat for immiserating labor conditions.
