Ay, pobrecito. Dutch does it as well. We don't have 'one' (een), we have 'onekin' (eentje). We don't do things kalm (klidně), but kalmpjes (klidňoučce).

Groetjes (pozdravíčky),
Gaston

There are modern languages that do this at well, though I can’t remember offhand (i.e. after dinner and a beer) which ones.

A photo of the front cover of issue 1670 of Private Eye magazine, with the caption “on shelves now.” The main headline reads “TRUMP ATTACKS IRAN,” with a subheading “HOW OPERATION EPIC FURY UNFOLDED.” The cover features four photo panels set in the situation-room with US political figures seated around a table. Speech bubbles add dialogue: “Is the Supreme Leader dead?” followed by “No, Trump always looks like this!”; “Mission accomplished!” answered with “Yes, I’ve killed the Epstein story”; “What happens next?” with the reply “Popular revolt and regime change,” and a follow-up, “In America?”; and finally, “Why have you started this war?” answered with “So that I can stop it,” alongside “I’ll ring the Nobel Committee.”

A gothic castle in the transylvanian mountains.

A great bear of a man, waring a stovepipe hat and carrying a cane: "Now that you are my bride, you will never leave this castle!"

His new bride replies "Wow! Your library is amazing!"

He continues "Beyond the castle is a high wall with no gate, and beyond that is a deep. Dark forest with no path."

She pulls a volume from a great bookcase, "I suppose it's my library too, now we're married."

He goes on "The forest is crawling with ravenous wolves, malignant birds and the spirits of long-dead travellers."

Ignoring him, carrying a pile of hardbacks "So many books! I can't believe My luck!"

He has sprouted wings, claws and cloven hoofs.
"When the sun sets, I transform into a wild beast and soar into the night, seized by a terrible bloodlust!"

She sits, examining her books as he flies out the window "Ok. I'll stay here and read. See you in the morning"

Two line graphs side-by-side illustrate linguistic sentiment shifts from 1860 to 1980.

Graph (a) "Lean becomes more positive": Shows the word "lean" undergoing amelioration. Its sentiment score rises over time as it becomes more semantically similar to "muscular" and less similar to "weak."

Graph (b) "Pathetic becomes more negative": Shows the word "pathetic" undergoing pejoration. Its sentiment score declines as it becomes more semantically similar to "weak" and less similar to "passionate."

Both graphs use red lines for sentiment and blue lines (solid and dashed) to represent semantic similarity to related words.

This article finds that 5% of sentiment-bearing words switched polarity between 1850 and 2000. Examples include "lean" (weak > masculine) and "pathetic" (passionate > weak).

The verb ‘to see’ is very distantly related to ‘to sue’ – and also to ‘segue’, ‘second’ and ‘sequence’.

They all come from a Proto-Indo-European root whose meaning can be reconstructed as “to follow”. In Germanic, it shifted to “to follow with the eyes”.

Zeg 'alarmsignaal'.
Zeg 'schrikbarende waarschuwing'.
Zeg 'we moeten in actie komen'.

Keuzes, keuzes.
