I had a conversation once with someone who didn't think Asian women were oppressed because they (we?) were desired so much, and I was so taken aback. The same has been happening for trans folks -- fetishization is another form of objectification, a desire for control and ownership.

I've been trying to promote the idea that a co-op -- where decisions can't be unilaterally made, where the interests of the users are voted on, where you can't sell the company to a single rich jerk -- is the way to go. Like if we can fund the fediverse, can't we fund a co-op? 😭

Real question, how come instead of trying out another technical approach or state-owned service, we don't have a social media co-op that's actually designed with the needs of people first?
