Just published: We graded the federal parties based on how they responded to Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and their commitment to upholding human rights in Palestine. Check out the CJPME Federal Election Guide for full report card and analysis: www.cjpme.org/election_gui...
Despite Mélanie Joly's initial denials, the fact remains that Canada brokered a weapons deal that explicitly identifies Israel as the end consumer. This is immoral given Israel’s ongoing genocide, but it also breaks Joly’s explicit promise to Canadians.
NEW: since @kelgallagh.bsky.social published a report last week about Canada being under contract to supply Israel with artillery propellant, I’ve been trying to get a coherent response from the Government and Melanie Joly. www.readthemaple.com/the-liberals...

Despite the efforts of Israel’s supporters to dismiss the term “apartheid” as fringe or extreme, these findings show that many Canadians are aligned with the view of human rights groups on this question. You can find the full results here: t.co/tJT2XTyIIr
Comparing the findings to an earlier Ipsos/University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll which asked Americans an identical question, we see that Canadians are more likely than Americans to describe Israel as “apartheid” and less likely to describe Israel as a “vibrant democracy.”
Perhaps most significantly, almost half (48%) of Canadians aged 18–34 who have an opinion say they view Israel as a state with segregation similar to apartheid. Only 4% say Israel is a vibrant democracy.
By political party, a significant majority (64%) of NDP supporters who gave an opinion view Israel as apartheid, as do a majority (53%) of BQ supporters and one-third (33%) of Liberals. Conversely, 0% of NDP, BQ, and Greens view Israel as a "vibrant democracy," and 8% Liberals.
Do Canadians view Israel as a vibrant democracy, or as apartheid? Despite Trudeau's claim that Canada and Israel hold "shared democratic values," a new EKOS poll commissioned by @cjpme.org suggests that 'apartheid' is the most popular choice for how Canadians view the country.

In March, Canada's UN Ambassador Bob Rae admitted that some of Israel’s activities "amount to de facto annexation," and said that "I think that's something we have to pay attention to as a government." Instead, Canada is now asking the ICJ NOT to investigate the matter.

Canada's new National Defence Minister is former Toronto police chief Bill Blair. Under his leadership, Toronto police committed so much brutality against G20 protestors that they had to pay out $16.5m in a settlement to over 1,100 people caught up in mass arrests.
