One tiny Hobbit against all the evil the world could muster. A sane being would have given up, but Samwise burned with a magnificent madness, a glowing obsession to surmount every obstacle, to find Frodo, destroy the Ring, and cleanse Middle Earth of its festering malignancy. He knew he would try again. Fail, perhaps. And try once more. A thousand, thousand times if need be, but he would not give up the quest. The Return of the King
I, like many this time of year, have been revisiting the Lord of the Rings. It is good to be reminded of Samwise and his bravery and seemingly endless supply of hope.
this isn’t about democracy.
it’s about power.

This is all I could hear when Gus Johnson would string out his name

“The message is that it’s cool to be dumb, and I think that’s incredibly dangerous.”
i am seriously begging democrats to bring the same smoke to this story that they brought to jimmy kimmel being indefinitely suspended
@mulaney.bsky.social too much tuna?
C’mon, I’m all for how many folks around country showed up to protest Trump. But let’s not be like them and use inaccurate pictures. One glance and you can tell the bottom picture is not from yesterday. The trees don’t have any leaves.
George Carlin might actually approve of this.

@pearljam.com Great seeing you Tuesday and bumping into Eddie and Matt at @thirdmanrecords.bsky.social today. Looking forward to Thursday’s show!

I am happy that hockey had this historic event. I am happy as a Caps fan. But call a spade a spade, Ovi could dissent and chooses to side with Putin. More context: swedenherald.com/article/ovec...
🫡 definitely is inspiring. And if nothing else, happy he knocked Strom Thurmond off the top. Quite befitting in a myriad of ways
Glad for the result, and for WI voters making their voice heard. I am also sad for America and the insane amount of money that could be better served in so many ways.
First past the post voting, partisanship and Citizens United have created an arms race.
I’m pleased with the result and happy for WI voters making their voice heard. But I can’t help but feel our system is broken due to first past the post voting and Citizens United.
This kind of money is beyond insane.
Glad to hear progress being made to improve parking access for drivers. Been seeing way too many forced to park along highways in recent years creating avoidable hazards. Seemingly some folks can reach across the isle still.

Took me a long time to find a beaut like that in RDR2 as well :p
I am glad to see protests, but I do worry that Republicans are actively seizing power and those attempting resistance are fighting back with words and dance. It’s so frustrating that I may need to dance myself…

Thank you, @astrazeneca.bsky.social , for showing me a way to die that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, necrosis of the perineum. Can we, please, ban direct-to-consumer marketing of pharmaceuticals?
It feels like we are watching the playbook of most autocrats play out right before us. Reminds me of “They Thought They Were Free” not because of Nazism but how a populace can turn, almost imperceptibly.

One way modern autocrats hold onto power is by crushing electoral competition, making it extremely hard for the public to vote them out. @amandacarpenter.bsky.social explains how the answer relies on preserving electoral competition. www.ifyoucankeepit.org/p/introducin...
The sparks of revolution are growing in a number of countries. It is framed as a “right vs left” battle. My hope for 2025 is that folks start realizing it is a class battle and that the hyper-wealthy are not to be worshipped. That the game needs to change so your average person can afford a life.
As I listen to “Year Zero”, it is startling how much closer to @treznor.bsky.social’s vision we are than back in 2007. Feels like we could use an alien race to tell us to shape up.
Random though as I have observed more and more content moving from broadcast to subscription media.
At what point does subscription media take the “cake” away from the masses? And what is the tipping point for the masses where their “cake” is too expensive?
