My continued little war to elevate fitness simplicity and effectiveness for realistic health outcomes over hyped up fat loss approaches that are long on hype, short on sustainability. The current adult obesity rate in America is approximately 40.3%, according to the CDC.
Cover of George Takeiβs They Called Us Enemyβ showing a young Japanese American boy in a line of people being sent to an internment camp guarded by a uniformed American soldier
Meant to mention this last week, but if you have a young person in your life whoβs into history or graphic novels or just good books, buy them George Takeiβs βThey Called Us Enemy.β My oldest couldnβt put it down.
It's becoming somewhat of a walled ideological garden and that's not good thing for growth mindmatters.ai/brief/is-blu...
Research on successful social platforms shows diverse networks retain longer while homophilic clusters plateau early. Bluesky needs a coalition of contrasts to survive.
Still of Last Week Tonight. John Oliver is talking about an Oct. 8, 2021 ProPublica/WPLN investigation titled "Black Children Were Jailed for a Crime That Doesn't Exist. Almost Nothing Happened to the Adults in Charge."
The new @lastweektonight.com piece on juvenile incarceration featured several @ProPublica stories.
First up was our 2021 investigation with @wpln.bsky.social about young Black kids in Tennessee jailed for a crime that doesn't exist:

Buyer beware. Olympic-style movements at the pace of many of these Fitness Extreme-istan Cults (FECs) are not built for everyone. In many instances, it's a one-way ticket to snap city. #fitness #exercise
NEW: Nike has made an expansive effort to convince consumers, investors and others that it is improving the lives of factory workers who make its products, not exploiting them. A rare view of wages at one Cambodian factory tests this claim.

My latest hip-hop piece from @aljazeera.com on the roots of political hip hop lyricism. Big shout out to linguist Alia Chughtai, Valentin Werner, Eric Arnold, and Zak Young for contributing to this piece. #hiphop

The DEI caused the plane crash narrative is a distraction. The tariffs are a distraction. Whatever insane nonsense Trump spews that the media will chase like cats chasing a laser light is a distraction. The only story that counts right now is the wholesale hijacking of control of the US government.
Very detailed analysis of what possibly happened. Very sad and tragic.
Thereβs a bit of copium from Chris Murphy but this conversation is super interesting.

"...19 million people who voted for President Joe Biden in 2020 but did not vote in 2024, nearly a third named Israel's U.S.-backed war on Gaza as a top reason for staying home." β Julia Conley via @commondreams.org @today.yougov.com
It's called the TOKYO Resilience Project. Maybe America can learn something from this project.
Until her death 85 years ago on January 13, 1940, Matilda was the last surviving passenger on the last-ever slave ship bound from the West African coast to North America in late 1859.
Eerie and scarily accurate.

Great post election analysis. The 2024 Election and Polling Controversies: A Conversation with John Couvillon
I wrote this in June 2023. It appears that the Apple Vision Pro was a complete failure and Apple is quietly discontinuing the device. I've said this a thousand times on new products, what problem are you trying to solve? When this first came out, I couldn't find that problem.
We expected to have to dedicate considerable resources to identifying the Israeli soldiers in photos and videos featured in our investigation into war crimes in Gaza.
Instead we found soldiers often posted material in their own names on publicly accessible platforms.
