i'm thinking about my great-grandfathers who, thankfully, all made it home.
their brothers, my great-granduncles, who lost their lives in different places around the world.
one great-granduncle who was a prisoner of war for 4 years.
and a great-grandmother killed whilst christmas shopping in 1942.
i don't know if it's just because i've been doing a lot of ancestry research over the past couple of years, but this VE day anniversary is hitting me hard

As we pause to remember the courage of those who fought fascism, we also reflect on the peace that came after, including the emergence of National Parks, to offer a place for reflection, tranquillity and renewal, for the whole nation.

I'm sure we're going to see the very people who have trashed its legacy seek to appropriate WW2 today - so let's remember what was really fought for: peace, a more united Europe, a land fit for heroes (mark 2) and the defeat of fascism.
