They don't. It's an idea/ wild pitch to generate the photo references needed to rebuild the portraits without costing them money while at the same time building some good will with the community that will have responded negatively to this information. Regardless of the previous portraits ethics.
Also, in case you did not get the idea from my previous comments, I've known about the photos being generated for quite some time now, and I regularly make MegaMek and Battletech content.
Clearly it's not an end-of-the-world issue for me.
It's a photo with a filter applied to it and inserted into a template. Nothing is drawn. You seem to not understand what's being stated here. People submit a photo, someone tosses it into a photoshop template with a filter.
1: No they don't.
2: No company in their right mind would tell someone not to donate to Toys for Tots so someone else can turn their submitted photo into a mecha pilot.
3. Not the point.
4. I am considering it
Yeah. It's all suspect now.
Here's a wild idea that I hope someone from MegaMek hears: Just ask the community to submit portraits. Maybe even turn it into a charity fundraiser "donate $10 or more to ___ and get your face in MegaMek"
Problem solved. Good will gained.
So maybe not all, but they are in there and many are suspect.
When doing the character dossiers for my Monday Night MegaMek game I took a look at a lot of the portraits zoomed in. There are constant AI generation artifacts of strange overlapping eyes and other features everywhere.

The earliest version of MM I have on my work and design laptop is 49.19.1 from May 2024 which has the AI generated portraits as well.
I am wholly against AI, and I hate that they used it instead of just putting filters on stock images, etc.
I've been battling moral problems with MegaMek for awhile now because all of the pilot portraits in the game are AI generated images.
So while you may escape AI Generated code going back to the milestone release... you're not escaping the problems with AI.
