In publishing, it's so important to practice emotional intelligence and learn how to navigate rejection and disappointment. Figure out coping mechanisms but also how to recognize when you need to switch strategies because the one you've been using doesn't work any more.

A water lily on a pond is centered around its reflection. The text above it says: Reflections one year after winning #RevPit 2025:
Below the water lily, the names "M" "Iris" "Marena" "Rakan" "Ree" "Nadine" and "Wera" float
When I submitted to #RevPit last year, I was curious about what happened to the previous yearβs winners. In the comments below, a few folks from the 2025 cohort have reflected on their experience! We'd love to hear stories from others as well!

If you are querying traditional publishers/agents, there is usually a section in the query letter where you list your accomplishments (in writing). This is where you list your top sales (short markets), awards and any placement that shows well. Keep a list.

The amount of romance will probably tip it one way or the other.

If it's equal parts romance and suspense, has an HEA, and the mystery is solved at the end, then I'd call it romantic suspense. If the romance is only a small part of the plot and the the pacing is quick and focus is more on the danger/ticking clock, then I'd call it a thriller.

Ah, got ya! Definitely check your comps and see where they sit on bookstore shelves and what AMZ uses for their sub-categories. That should help. :)

Submission Anxiety? Why Your Nerves Are Actually a Good Sign
Feeling nervous about querying agents? That anxiety might indicate you're a talented writer doing your research. Learn to know the difference.
Here's something agents don't always say out loud: the writers who are nervous are almost always the ones who care the most, polish the most, and write the best.
So, if you're anxious? Probably a good sign.

How much (or little) info do you need before you pick up a book?

I think if it's accessible, it'd probably work for me. I enjoy fantasy that occurs in our world, or something close enough to it, over something massive (LOTR-ish). Totally new world, new language, new rules, epic journeys. I get lost in those types of books, and not in a good way.

Great question! Cozy mystery to me means no gore/violence/SA on the page. Usually an amateur detective. Small town. Maybe a pet/animal companion. Sometimes there may be some fantasy/magic/paranormal assumptions mixed in.
