Nature Report, Killed by Trump, Is Released Independently

When the US govt terminated the National Nature Asst, @phillevin.bsky.social + the author team were determined not to let that stop them.

They re-organized, set up an advisory committee, found funding…and now the brand new Nature Record is open for public comment. 👏🌳👏🌲

Really enjoyed watching this paper unfold. The idea that selection operates at multiple levels is fascinating, controversial and difficult to test. But not untestable nor untested. César and colleagues show this well!

Furthermore, while we do our best to change global co2 levels we only have so much control. There’s the potential to completely change soil microbial communities in a given location.

Really happy to see this one live. The microbes matter a lot. Microbial composition explains more variation in productivity than a massive global change factor like co2 fertilization.

Really excited to host Dr. Susan Cook-Patton tomorrow. Susan is one of the top scientific voices on natural climate solutions, continuously pushing new analyses that help us understand the potential of natural climate solutions, as well as their limitations.

This webinar is free and open to all!

Who lives underground?

Find out now in our new paper published in @nature.com.

Key finding: 90% of predicted mycorrhizal biodiversity hotspots lie outside protected areas.

Man speaking in front of a slide that says “can we manage the forest fungal microbiome”

Super cool talk by @colinaverill.bsky.social on the effect (and manipulation) of soil microbiome (mycobiome) on growth of forests.

Basically doing for forests what fecal transplants do for managing C diff

Y'all if you read a great scientific paper or see a great talk, consider writing the author and tell them you think it's awesome. It's really easy, it builds relationships, and you probably make their day.

If you're working in enhanced rock weathering and you hate your lysimeters... know that we hate them too. There is a better way! Reach out - we're happy to help folks deploy this new approach.

We're deploying this method at our microbiome restoration X ERW trial in Wales with @thecarboncom.bsky.social. It's probably the only way we can get weathering data at high enough resolution to properly model weathering rates and associated carbon removal.

31.03.2025 00:50 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Lysimeters only work if the soil has enough water. If you've ever tried, it seems like these instruments barely work. Jones et al. instead use an ultra centrifuge to measure alkalinity at any soil moisture level, and demonstrate this method is more effective for detecting changes in ERW projects.

Utilizing soil centrifugation for accurate estimates of carbon dioxide removal via enhanced rock weathering Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a promising CO2 removal (CDR) strategy that aims to accelerate the natural process of silicate weathering to increase soil pore water alkalinity and sequester CO2. Ho...

Measuring enhanced rock weathering is hard, but essential for quantify its CDR potential. Best practice is to measure soil pore water alkalinity with lysimeters - and this is very hard.

New work by Gregory Jones and Bonnie Waring finds a much simpler way! www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-6...

Been reading up on the "super donor" framework in medical microbiology FMT work. So much relevance for soil transplant work that considers the provenance of donor ecosystems. This review has been particularly helpful.
