If anyone is friends with any Georgian air traffic controllers, buy them a nice bottle of wine. As guardians of pretty much the only narrow gap still available between Europe and Asia that avoids both Iran, the Gulf, Ukraine and Russia, they are under some substantial pressure.

The man doesn't even have a reason he started this, beyond a distraction from other messes he's made and his own ego. The rest is façade. Hundreds of lives, and he thinks he's playing Mariocart.

My neighbors in Providence are shoveling my street because 3 full days after the storm started, our street has not been plowed...

It is eminently clear that city of PVD @pvdcitycouncil.bsky.social needs to support in clearing snow from sidewalks. Relying on neighbors to do their part is not working: I still cannot exit my street & road is unplowed. I also hurt my back shoveling yesterday - not everyone can manage this amount.

There's something about seeing the Epstein files create political shockwaves through other countries (calls for Starmer to step down, questions about the Norwegian's princess' ability to fulfill the monarch's role) and what feels like just ripples in the US, perhaps given all the other shit going on

"What can Democrats actually do?"
- Vote against funding for ICE and DHS
- State that any ICE officers who commit crimes under Trump will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law
- Encourage cities and states to refuse to cooperate with ICE
- Explain ICE is part of Trump's tyranny

I am so angry with all of the 'thoughts and prayers' rhetoric from our elected officials right now. After so many shootings, the answer is in our hands, and it is absolutely much more restrictive gun laws (if not getting rid of them entirely). Young people deserve so much better than this.

But they did.
I feel like I need to write a column on the erosion of truly public space and community because of phones, but Iβm glad other people jumped in on this one too. Not that I think that Iβm going to change too much, but at least I realized I was not alone in the sentiment.
The end!

Anyway, I then said βmultiple people have told you to turn it down, so turn it down!β
Then, the most surprising, awesome thing happened. The whole, small restaurant joined in & told that guy to turn it down. He was so surprised. I guess he genuinely thought he was right and others wouldnβt care 6/

Or earplugs to ignore each other. In public space, we should consider each other and care for each other, not act like entitled a$$holes (who are prob addicted to our phones - this is why I think a lot of people get SO mad when they canβt use their phones as they wish but that is for another day) 5/

Phone dude was mad. He said, βthis is a public restaurant, I can do what I want so mind your own f-ing business!β
I was mad. I feel like common discourse on this topic is βbuy earplugsβ but I am not settling for society to be broken down into our own individual bubbles where we just buy EarPods 4/

Enjoying a meal or living their lives with their loud phone convos, game playing, videos. This was not the first time Iβd experienced this.
Anyway, a woman at the next table then said loudly, βhey you! You in the grey sweater!β To the phone dude. βcan you turn it down?β 3/

I tell him, βcan you turn it down please? Thanks!β loudly from across the small room. I think he heard, the volume seemed to reduce.
Then it came BACK on. I couldnβt believe it. 10 years ago this would have been an absurd scene, but now people feel like itβs ok to infringe upon other people 2/

Thread about phones & public space π±
Over the weekend I was in a restaurant and a dude had his phone on speakerphone and was having a loud video call on it. A guy at the next table told him to turn it down and he did.
Then, that guy left. Phone dude turns it back on. 1/

That power trip is dangerous for people on the other side, whoever Trump deems that to be - anyone from a Harris supporter, to racialized people, to trans people. In different ways and degrees yes, but it's getting real. 4/4

While that may still be true, there is certainly a group of people who are emboldened to be openly racist now that Trump is coming in. And that is awful. It is not a legitimate political position worth engaging with, it is just a feeling of raw power. 3/4

Nothing like this has ever happened to me before in PVD. It's frustrating because I've spent a good amount of time trying to put myself in Trump supporters shoes and take their grievances seriously, as so many on the left harped on the economy as the main reason for the shift. 2/4

This is far from over, in the US and in the Netherlands or elsewhere. I am Dutch and I have lived in the US a long while. These are my countries and I will fight for my right to be a part of them in the fullest sense, and I will fight for people who are more affected by Trump et al than I am. 2/3

While there is a lot to be said about historical colonial relations between the Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean islands, Iβm not sure βbrutal oppressionβ characterizes the current situation at all, and makes for a convenient distraction when your country produces a huge amount of fossil fuels π§
