American Science, Shattered
A multipart series on how the Trump administration has disrupted labs, upended lives, and delayed discoveries.
www.statnews.com/american-sci...
By slashing teams that gather critical data, the Trump administration has left the federal government with no way of understanding if policies are working β and created a black hole of information whose consequences could ripple out for decades.

Media: If you cover events properly tomorrow, weβll see his Army-themed birthday party for five minutes and the millions of us wanting him gone for the rest of the day.

its crazy how dominant germany was in science (especially chemistry) in the 19th century, it was basically the international language for scientists, people came from all over the world to train at heidelberg etc, and then....
Raskin: This is a gangster state. This is not basically a legitimate government that is sometimes doing corrupt things. This is an essentially corrupt enterprise. It's like watching The Sopranos. Every day, they get up and they try to figure out how to plunder and pillage the people
Not sure who needs to hear this, but @thekrebscycle.bsky.social, as the first director of CISA and an outspoken truth teller in the years since then, has done incredibly important work for the cybersecurity community and the country. Pretty much the definition of a βgood faith actor.β
Culture Warlords is a tour de force ..guess I need to get this!
99.4% of new drugs approved by the FDA are the product of NIH funded research.
Remember this every time you see another headline on the NIH funding cuts.
It will directly impact YOU.

"The country has invested in, and innovated through, this scientific public service for over a century, not for selling it to the highest bidder, but for the common good. Dismantling NOAA and the National Weather Service is a presidential grift that we must oppose."
A friend drove two hours today for her breast cancer chemotherapy only to learn it was canceled due to NIH cuts. Clinical trial ended midstream. No treatment, no restart, no plan, no information. Her bro-in-law's chemo was also canceled.
i generally think youβre awesome in this case youβre wrong..this shutdown would have been different then all others ..they (trump and crew) would have simply kept on picking and changing who is essential and who is not for months and would never feel the pressure to open feds back up for months
1. Amazingly prolific and important columnist deserving of much more respect.
2. Spiking is one thing β itβs their paper, so they can make stupid decisions all day long β but not explaining the spike to someone like her is chickenshit move of an inept leader.
3. They donβt care.

DOGE == Keystone Cops
A team of archivists has recreated the pre-Trump CDC website as a live, easy-to-navigate website that should be indexed by Google. The team is hosting it in Europe. Cool project that is sadly necessary:
www.404media.co/archivists-r...
18F staffers- who were summarily fired en masse overnight- issue statement expressing shock, bewilderment:
"18F was doing exactly the type of work that DOGE claims to want β yet we were eliminated."
I canβt get over the fact that two separate people did Nazi salutes at CPAC and itβs so normalized at this point that itβs barely even notable on TV news. In any halfway normal era that shit would warrant wall-to-wall coverage.
This is really smart by @sanders.senate.gov Go to republican districts and push voters to pressure their republican reps.

Amen to that.
DOGEβs accounting of its βsavingsβ is riddled with sloppy mistakes. The five largest cuts that it listed on its website earlier this week were all incorrect β making the savings look far larger than they were in reality.
The Trump administration blocked key parts of the federal governmentβs apparatus for funding biomedical research, effectively halting progress on much of the countryβs future work on illnesses like cancer and addiction despite a federal judgeβs order to release grant money.
"We don't work for DOGE. We have always worked for you."
Yes!
Why arenβt they taking the fired federal workers who are sharing their heartbreaking storiesβthe ones that Musk says were being paid to do nothingβand making them famous? The cancer researcher on the verge of a breakthrough? The park ranger in Yosemite who wonβt be there to conduct rescues and save lives? The air traffic controller who can speak to the connection between understaffing and recent plane crashes? Is it even safe to fly in Trumpβs America? The Democrats should be amplifying these folksβwriting op-eds about them, refusing to go on camera without sharing their spotlight, pressuring their IG influencers to raise them upβbut instead, we learn their stories from Reddit. As Moira Donegan wrote in The Guardian, βWhy are the Democrats so spineless?β
I've noted some of the procedural things Democrats could be doing in Congress, but this point from @edgeofsports.bsky.social's great piece in the Nation deserves emphasis.
This is basic politics, and it's baffling that every Democrat isn't doing it every day.

The Washington Post refused to run this ad. Sure would be a shame if it went viral.
60 MINUTES: βUtter nonsense. The most accountable aid agency in the world is USAIDβ¦ DOGE fired their top 58 officials within an hour of arrivingβ¦β
This was never about efficiency.
