A giant pomelo over a country estate. The image is part of a book about famous citrus fruits of Nuremberg (VD18 14760916).
What looks like an alien starship visiting a small country estate in eighteenth-century Germany is in fact, *checks notes* a giant pomelo. So nothing to see here, #skystorians
I love coming across a comic that perfectly describes how I feel right now in this first month of my PhD! Thats me!!!!!!! Give it a couple years and my hair might be the same colour too
A fantastic week at #COSPAR25 in Nicosia, Cyprus where I presented at my first international conference! An absolutely amazing experience. Thank you to everyone involved for making it such a fascinating and memorable week.

1st day for my new PhD students: Nicole Green and @astrologee.bsky.social We'll be working on a project entitled 'Beyond Metalaw: Extraterrestrial Life in the International Legal Order' where we will explore the challenges extraterrestrial life poses for the international legal order.
Burnt toast theory!!
Scafell Pike, Lake District. The tallest mountain in England.
It is important to remember that whilst we search for habitable worlds out there, much of what we are looking for is right here on our beautiful Earth already. We shouldnβt take it for granted!
Beautiful sights on a beautiful day!πππͺ

One of the great joys of my job is seeing brilliant new thinking. This is a fascinating piece by @astrologee.bsky.social
excellent blog post from our current LLM student and from September my PhD student @astrologee.bsky.social slsablog.co.uk/blog/blog-po...
Take a look at my group's new paper on distinguishing biological and non-biological tubules of iron-oxide, led by Melanie Podbielski. Yes, the title is a Star Trek reference...
Happy to share my first ever published paper (as a contributor). The product of my placement year just over 2 years ago. Looking at fossilised organic/inorganic tubules on Mars.
So honoured to have been part of this team.

My new blog post for the socio-legal studies association is up about planetary protection and surface space waste!
Is it possible to leave no trace in space? Should we strive for it anyway? Why?
A video from a year ago, during my undergrad degree. Little did I know at the time Iβd be doing a masterβs, let alone a PhD in Space law, come October.
Would recommend Bio w/Sci&Soc to any young scientist for the academic and personal development opportunities.

Many space lawyers do bring astrobiology into their discussion. So it depends from what angle you need it. Charles Cockell comes to mind with some of his philosophical arguments considering microbes or extraterrestrial liberty.

An astonishing headline reporting on new observations from a team led to Nikku Madhusudhan claims theyβve found βhints of lifeβ on a planet orbiting a dwarf star some 124 light years away. Whatβs going on? (1/n) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... π π§ͺ
really good thread, recently reread Dicks Biological Unniverse as Im writing a bid on the legal implications of finding ET and thought a lot the history if 'false detection' of extrasolar planets. Need to take the position of highly skeptical - risk seeing a version of the Martian Canals...
Excellent letter in @thetls.bsky.social. A bit of perspective, pls!
Was back in Edinburgh this week, attending a workshop about outer space from an ecological economics perspective! So interesting to discuss themes like sci-fi, space mining, settlement and ET with a fresh lens and with new people too!
Also got to see the lovely @astr0mia.bsky.social too!!
Received an offer this morning for my dream PhD!!!! Extraterrestrial life and space law combined. How exciting and mind blowing that this project even exists and the fact that I get to do it is even more exciting! Got to finish the masterβs first but so excited for this next chapter!
βSpace isnβt just a resource for us to use as much as we like. We actually have to think of what rights space has and what we are leaving for future generations.β - Dr Alice Gorman (me)

So lovely to come across a starter pack with my name on it among so many great researchers in Astrobiology.
Donβt see packs pop up too often anymore but if you are interested in Astrobiology, I can recommend this pack!! ππ«π
Also super important to recognise that this might become a reality as our dark skies are becoming ever-threatened with the increase of satellites & mega-constellations! Whether it is astronomers or night sky enjoyers, there is a lot on the lineβ¦ π°οΈπ‘π
First clear night sky in Newcastle so long! Must have been two weeks or so that the clouds have covered the view. Perfect night for an astronomical society observation & lecture evening β¨

One of the funkiest bands around - Vulfpeck - released a single today worth a mention. Upbeat, undeniably funky and a nod to manyβs favourite bear in our night sky!

The cosmonaut used to appear to βholdβ a flag under certain lighting. The flag on a neighbouring building would cast a shadow onto the mural, moving in the wind and adding to the illusion
Due to renovations and gentrification of Kreuzberg, the building owners changed hands and the flag was removedβ¦
