I call them the two sisters. They listen well when you need to vent and teach you about the seasons should you ask. That's the thing about nature, people seldom ask and yet trees are always willing to answer.

What comes to mind?

A deep blue sky with streaks of haze. Walking down a steep outcrop of jagged gray rocks. Below us just ahead is a small sunny glade in a mature hardwood forest. Two of the trees sport bright red and orange autumn foliage. The ground is carpeted with freshly fallen leaves.

Two old coppiced hazel trees rise from thick moss-covered bases, their trunks splitting upward into clusters of slender stems. The moss spreads over the roots and lower wood like a soft green cloak. Between the two trees is a natural opening that feels almost like a doorway into the woodland beyond. Sunlight filters through branches overhead, lighting the moss so it glows bright green against the darker bark. Ferns and fresh spring plants grow at the mossy base of the trunks, and the narrow gap between them draws the eye inward as if inviting the viewer to step quietly into the woodland.

Walk right in...
