I carried out this research as a PhD student at @ipgp.bsky.social and @upcite.bsky.social, in collaboration with colleagues from other institutes that I thank again: ISTeP, ISTO, @universityofleeds.bsky.social, the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in Kamchatka and Lomonosov University!
β±οΈIn Part II, we tracked magmatic processes over twelve years prior to the eruption, followed by magma ascent to a shallow reservoir and a heating process at least three months before the eruption. Magma was last stored in a cryptodome at least two months before the climactic phase of the eruption.
πOur Part I paper (Martel et al., 2025) identified a three-level magma storage below Bezymianny: a deep reservoir, a shallow reservoir in which the pre-cryptodome magma resided and from which the post-blast pumiceous magma originated, and a subsurface cryptodome from which the blast was initiated.
πͺΆThrilled that our latest research on the pre-eruptive timescales of Bezymianny's 1956 eruption (Kamchatka)π has just been published in Bulletin of Volcanology! Read more here: rdcu.be/earlI
And our Part I paper on Bezymianny's plumbing system: rdcu.be/earlT
Massive thanks to my amazing co-authors!
The latest weekly Bulletin on the activity of #Etna is out, with lots of details, data and images!

Our latest led by Corin Jorgenson: melt and bubble inclusions show that excess fluids were essential to prepare the last caldera forming eruption of Colli Albani: academic.oup.com/petrology/ad...
#Etna continues emitting its lava flow from a vent close to the summit. By the evening of 10 February 2025, the flow has reached a length of more than 2 km, but is far from inhabited areas and cultivated land. Photos taken from the town of Belpasso and and the village of Ragalna
With all those ugly and embarrassing news and images coming from across the Atlantic, here is snow-covered @Etna at dawn, seen from my home on 21 January 2025 for you to enjoy.
Time to begin this whole BlueSky thing!Time to build/rebuild a new sci-comm network!
Come along for things about volcanoes, ocean science, geology, and maybe the odd penguin! #science
