I never realized until last semester that Frederick Douglas DEFENDED the US constitution as an anti-slavery document - against white abolitionists like Garrison who advocated northern secession from the morally compromised union.

(We're) Back in the USSR
What the struggle of dissidents against "totalitarian consumerism" can tell us about reviving civil society.
Vaclav Havel has become newly relevant thanks to the Canadian PM.
Mid-sized countries, nor US residents, can no longer indulge the lie that compliance with our government will buy us safety.
250 years later, itβs time for more revolutionary rethinking.

I'm not sure Democrats in D.C. are aware that their base's rage against ICE has reached a level of blinding white-hot intensity.
They're worried about "looking weak" for voting "against law enforcement" when they should be worried a mob of housewives is going to come beat them to death if they do.

Minneapolis's general strike is a moment of civic re-awakening for our country.
It speaks to a growing desire to pursue the common good, to lock arms with neighbors and build a Great Community.
We aren't beaten. We are building.

My father believed in art, community, and the life of the mind.
He died in 2023. What he believed in now seems not just besieged, but morally compromised and irrelevant.
How can I keep faith with my father and his liberal humanism without illusions?
I have to write on this.

Leaders of Historiansβ Group Veto Resolutions Critical of Israel
As far as I'm concerned, the issue here is the AHA leadership hiding behind the pretense of "fiduciary responsibility" (to use a term that anti-resolution speakers frequently invoked at the business meeting) to veto a political position they disagree with. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/12/a...

Distraught woman says ICE killed her wife in video after deadly Minneapolis shooting
"They killed my wife," the distraught woman says, adding, "They shot her in the head."
An ICE agent shot and killed a 37-year-old woman who was driving an SUV in Minneapolis on Wednesday. / Screenshot/@Breaking911
"They killed my wife. I don't know what to do," the woman says through sobs in the footage, with a damaged SUV visible in the distance behind her. "We stopped to videotape, and they shot her in the head," the woman cries.
"We have a six-year-old at school," she says, almost unable to breathe, as a chaotic scene in which federal officers prevented at least one doctor who was on the scene from assisting the shot victim unfolds. "We're new here," the distraught woman says in despair.
You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today.
This could be you.

Zohran should keep doing new things each day that get his opposition so pissed they can't focus on any one thing to gripe about.

Zohran Mamdani Must Not Give Good Intentions a Bad Name
John Lindsay expanded welfare, civil rights, and public spendingβyet left New Yorkers politically disarmed. Zohran Mamdani should learn the lessons of his mayoralty.
Governing from the left requires more than the moral clarity of a single progressive administration:
It requires building an infrastructure that prepares the ground for the next one.
Zohran, take note.

Vaudeville was the theatrical equivalent of TikTok: short bits of entertainment with little thematic, character or plot development.
Similar formats dominated most 19th-century stages.
The holistically unified work of art is a recent - and perhaps passing - development.

View of Organized for Democracy? Left Challenges Inside the Democratic Party
I've been going hard on partyism lately, but this is the pièce de résistance.
A new para-party can combine our era's hyper-politicization with grassroots organizing and civic engagement.
The DSA must be that party.
