Beyond #academia, #meronymity could support individuals particularly #marginalized groups in engaging by offering a new paradigm for online interactions where #credibility, #privacy, & #accountability coexist. Future work should explore #meronymity in other social contexts.
In a field deployment, junior scholars felt more comfortable asking a wider range of experts using LiTweeture. They also asked questions they'd otherwise refrain from. #Meronyms provided helpful context and preserved #credibility and #accountability, while protecting #identities.
We built #LiTweeture, a system for academics to seek #paper #recommendations on Twitter & Mastodon using #meronymity. Users create context-specific #meronyms, add #endorsers, and message #experts and #helpers who can amplify their requests.
We designed a #meronymity model where users compose #meronyms with chosen #identity #signals. #Endorsers and helpers can vouch for and amplify users' messages. This enhances #credibility and reach while preserving some #anonymity.
In #academia, barriers deter public #discourse due to fear of senior judgment. Our study with 20 scholars showed a need for safer dialogue. #Anonymity lessens pressure but lacks #accountability. Scholars favored #meronymity for engaging while managing their #identity #disclosure.
#Meronymity allows people to selectively reveal verified #identity aspects relevant to a conversation, like expertise or background, while maintaining some anonymity, fostering a space where one can contribute without full exposure of #identity to balance #credibility & #privacy.
